About the final project for: Stylized Acrylic Painting: Explore Color and Shape

Stylized Acrylic Painting: Explore Color and Shape

“Congratulations! You have reached the end of this Domestika course. Thank you for taking part and I hope you enjoyed it. It's now time to work on your project. This could mean finishing the piece you started by completing the course tasks or making a brand new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell us if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. Here are the main steps to follow: Prime and practice with acrylics First, prime your wood panel and practice getting a feel for your acrylic paint. Choose a reference image Find a suitable reference image. Remember that we're using the reference just to inform our creative piece, so it doesn't have to be perfect.

Plan the composition and transfer the image Decide your composition, think about your color palette, and transfer a loose sketch onto your wood panel. This will let you jump right into working on your painting without needing to pause to make decisions or corrections along the way. Once you've done that, transfer your image. Remember that I showed you two methods to do this, so you can choose whichever you feel more comfortable with!
Paint the piece Start painting! The first goal is to achieve "full coverage" of the panel with paint. Try to get 3-4 large shapes (including the background) onto your wood panel, so none of the wood shows through.
Render the image Render slowly and holistically. Move from area to area, adding medium-large shapes. Then do another pass with slightly smaller shapes. Make sure each shape you paint benefits the painting overall. Remember: don't overdo it! Finally, render your focal point with your smallest shapes. Once finished, carefully put a couple of small highlights to make your subject shine.
Photograph and varnish the piece Take a photo of your finished piece! Then, let your painting fully dry and apply a thin coat or two of varnish. Be careful not to overbrush varnish, as this can make it cloudy.
And that's all! I can't wait to see the project you come up with, so don't forget to share it in the forum. You can do so by clicking on "Create your project". I'll be more than happy to answer any of the questions you might have along the way! I'll try getting back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, participate in the forum, comment on others' work, and interact with the community! See you there! ”

“ Final Project Thank you for making it to the end of this course. Now, I'll share some tips and tricks for your final project. Remember when working with acrylic paint that the consistency is important. Remember to mix in some water and work your paint to get it as smooth as possible. When looking for a reference image, try to be creative and not just rely on Google searches. When you think about the composition of your piece, remember to leave a little room for negative space around your subject. Make sure that your subject isn't touching the edges of your panel, but also, isn't too small...”

Hannah Webb (or The Obanoth as she’s known online) is an acrylic painter from Ohio, currently living in Los Angeles. She went to art school, and inspired by the desire to learn more, moved to California. There she began painting with oils before changing to acrylic, learning to mix colors and explore shapes. She has since developed her signature style, which is characterized by blocky brush strokes, hard-edge mark-making, and bold color.

Hannah believes the purpose of an artist is to bring their own voice into the world, and she exhibits her work both in the US and internationally. She also sells her paintings to collectors, and works on commissions for brands and companies, including large-scale public murals.
