Painterly Editorial Illustrations: How to Quickly Create Art Based on New Stories

“Congratulations! You have reached the end of this Domestika course. I hope you've enjoyed walking through my creative process. By using the ideas and guidance I have given you, you're now free to go ahead with your own animation. This could mean finishing the artwork you started while completing the course tasks, or you could begin a brand new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique piece of your own. Let's revisit the necessary steps to complete your project. The Brief Select an article and read it thoroughly, making note of what the visual cues are. Imagine this was assigned to you, so don't cherry-pick too much! The Sketches Create as many rough thumbnail sketches as you can! Don't worry, no one needs to see these, so make them as messy as you want. Then, pick 3 to turn into actual sketches, paying attention to composition but not taking too long on developing them. Remember: these are still sketches!

The Concept Land on a concept and think about how you want to animate it. Make adjustments and sketch your motion too, if necessary. The Still Illustration Once your concept is locked, start to complete your illustrations by blocking out the shapes with color. Remember to keep different layers for each shape. Then, using clipping masks, start adding texture, highlights, and shadows to your shapes. Basically, finish up your still illustration! The Animation When your base is complete, draw the layers that will be moving and test your animation in Procreate. Final Touch-ups Take your work to Photoshop to add texture, make color corrections, and refine your animation. Exporting the Piece Once this is done, you can export it as a JPEG, MP4 or GIF.
Sharing Your Art Remember to promote your work! You can export your time-lapse from Procreate: it's always fun to see how a piece was made. Finally, you can add this piece to your portfolio and reach out to art directors, showing it as a sample of your work to get more commissions. I can't wait to see the animation you will come up with, so don't forget to share it in the forum! You can do so by clicking on "Create your project". Make sure to show the final result and your progress towards it with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell me if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. Also, if you post your final animation on social media, tag me using the hashtag #KattyHuertasDomestika, so I can find your work! I'll be more than happy to answer any of the questions you might have! I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, participate in the forum, comment on others' work, and interact with the community! See you there.”

“Thank you so much for taking this course. I hope you enjoy it and that you learned something new. Now it's time for you to complete your editorial illustration. First, you're going to select your article. Try not to cherry pick as much, since as an illustrator, you don't get to pick what you get to work on as much. Once you've read it many times, you can start highlighting visual cues for you to illustrate. We'll start by making as many rough sketches as you want. Remember, there are no bad ideas and no one needs to see this. These are just for you to take notes of what could be visually in...”
