About the final project for: Introduction to Hand-Painting on Clothing

Introduction to Hand-Painting on Clothing

“You have now reached the end of this Domestika course. Thank you so much for enrolling! I hope you have enjoyed it and got inspired to paint your clothes. Before saying goodbye, let's review the necessary steps you need to follow to complete your project. Keep in mind that I have shown you my style, but I don't expect you to copy it: allow the designing process to come from you, tapping into the styles that feel authentic and exciting to you. Inspiration First, pick your garment, and create a mood board of images you find visually exciting. You can look for inspiration in many different places, not only art and design – you can even spend the day walking around your home and town, photographing things that inspire you.

Sketches Make sketches and studies from your mood board, and with the help of these reference images, begin to create a few simple linear designs. Think about any emotions that you would like to convey in your illustrations and how would you do that: maybe through symbols, colour, or subject matter.
Style Develop your own visual language with experiments in mark making. Get familiar with your materials and learn how to use them to achieve different effects and express your own style.
Stencilling Use stencils to help you plan out and scale up your designs, ready to be painted onto your garment. Play around when choosing where you would like to put your designs on the garment. This might change your ideas of the design, so be flexible! Also consider what body part will go in what part of your piece, and how does that body part move.
Painting Finally, paint your garment with the freehand technique, and use stencils for the trickier shapes if you want to. You can then add the details freehand. Remember to take a slow and steady approach: stand back from your piece and keep checking how your design is looking.
I can't wait to see what amazing designs you create! You can share your project by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result and the steps that have led you to it. It would be great if you showed a picture of each step and added a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. Get involved in the forum, encourage each other, and find inspiration from your peers! I will try my best to answer your questions and give you my feedback as often as possible. See you in the forum! ”

“ Final Project We're at the end of the course. Thank you so much. I hope you've enjoyed taking a peek into the way I work and have been inspired to paint onto your own clothing. Before we go, I'd like to give you a few more final tips in creating your project. Try to use second-hand clothing or breathe life into some unwanted clothes in the back of your wardrobe. That way, this process is way more sustainable. When you're creating your mood board, think laterally about what inspires you. I take inspiration from so many places: textile design, but also fine art, photography, product design....”
