“ Sketching in Pencil In this lesson, let's take our reference photo and get started with some sketching. People are always asking me how I avoid getting grey pencil marks in paintings when I'm sketching on location and the answer is a sketching colour pencil. I love sketching colour pencils. It adds to the painting rather than detracts. I've got lots of colour pencils and I try to pick one that's sympathetic to the final painting. A warm brown often works well while sketching people or buildings. If I was sketching a plant, I would sketch in green. These pencils are water soluble, so once ...”

Emma Block is a multidisciplinary illustrator, teacher, and author living in London. She began drawing and painting at a young age and started freelancing at just 17 years old, selling her work online and licensing designs to greetings card companies. Emma later completed a national diploma in art and design and set up a blog showcasing her work online. She then went on to study for a BA in illustration and, during her final year, was approached by a publisher to illustrate her first book, Tea and Cake.
Since then, Emma has worked with clients in publishing, editorial illustration, branding, and beyond, including Penguin Random House, Hatchet Publishing, Mollie Makes, Stylistic Magazine, Airbnb, and Etsy. She’s also written multiple books, The Joy of Watercolor, Getting Started with Gouache, Slow Travel Journal: The Small Delights of Going Away, and Watercolor Life. Emma has taught hundreds of people how to paint through her workshops and aims to bring joy to people’s lives through her illustrations that are filled with color and texture.
