About the final project for: Paper Sculpture for Set Design

Paper Sculpture for Set Design

“We've reached the end of this course! Thank you so much for taking part in it. It’s been such a pleasure teaching you. It is now time to start working on your final project if you haven’t already. You can use my final project as an example but I’d love for you to design your own project. I can’t wait to see what you come up with! To help you, I will sum up here the main steps you need to follow to complete your project. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. I would very much like to see that as part of your presentation, as that would help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. Decide upon the theme for your set design and research images. In my case, I decided to base my design around the idea of a wild flower meadow, but I added in some bold geometric shapes in natural colours for some added visual interest and a graphic edge. Select the colours you'll use and start sketching out your design. Once you have researched the elements you would like to include, pick out your paper colours. Then, begin sketching out your composition and assign your chosen paper colours to each element of the design.

Practise the paper techniques. Now it is time to start experimenting with the paper! At this stage, you've learned a range of papercraft techniques, so you can practise them before starting on your design. Take your time to observe the shapes of the elements you want to reproduce and see how the techniques that I showed you can help to make them look more real.
Translate your sketched design into paper pieces. Once you feel comfortable enough with the different techniques, build the main pieces of your design then finish with the extra ones.
Assemble and photograph the set. Bring everything together! Assemble your final composition and photograph it, remembering to get some close-up shots, photos of the individual elements, as well as of the composition as a whole.
My final tips, as you set off to create your final project, are to enjoy the process and not be scared to improvise and make changes along the way. Don’t forget to share your project on the forum. I will respond to your posts and questions as soon as possible, but I’d also like to encourage you to participate in the forum, comment on others’ work, and help to create a paper crafting community! If you want to publish your work on other platforms too, like Instagram, don't forget to use the hashtag #SarahMatthewsDomestika, so I can find your posts. See you on the forum!”

“Final Project Thank you so much for taking part in my Domestika course. It was a pleasure teaching you, but before our final goodbyes, I want to share the steps and give some final tips before you go off to make your own paper creations. Feel free to use my design for practice. If you follow the lessons, you should have all the skills needed to create your own paper set. Before starting your own set design, you need to decide upon a theme and research reference images. In my case, I decided to base my design on a wildflower meadow. I added in some geometric shapes in natural colours for som...”
