Product Design: Experiment with Color, Material, and Shape

“Here ends our journey together. Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of the behaviour and the potential of a variety of materials and will be able to use that knowledge for your designs. Now I would like to see your Final Project. Starting from a material of your choice, create a unique object that reflects your identity as a product designer. If you feel bold enough, work on a design with each of the materials we have seen during this course. These are the main steps you should follow: Test and see what works. Try various alternatives to make the material your own.

Sketch and think of ways of creating it into a product. Make mock-ups or scale models.
Work on your final 1:1 models and then photograph them to communicate them. Think of the context very well if you want to sell your own work, work with a label or create more research or gallery work. Whatever you decide to do, be creative, don't be afraid of experimenting and trying new ideas. Don't hesitate to share your comments in the forum on your impressions while working on your Final Project. It's also nice to provide constructive feedback to your fellow classmates. One can always learn new things from other people's opinions. I will try to answer your questions in the forum, but please be patient if it takes me a while. I might be busy with my professional projects. Thank you very much and keep creating! ”

“Final Project Congratulations, you have reached the end of the course. I hope you enjoyed it. Now, I'd like to review some highlights of this course. Remember to create your material library. With this material library, you can later create your designs. Remember that if you make your designs, you can make them as a scale model, a one-to-one sample or a prototype. This way, you can communicate it with possible producers later. Then, we made some experiments with four different materials. You can also add your materials to these experiments to come up with new results and new outcomes. Don't...”

Growing up in a household with artist parents made Lex aware of his desire to pursue an artistic career path from a young age. After graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven, Lex opened his self-titled design studio in Rotterdam in 2009, where he started to work on a variety of projects, creating both one-of-a-kind and mass production pieces.

His method focuses on testing the boundaries and properties of the materials he uses most: wood, stone, and metal. Combining form, function, and fun into each object he creates, Lex experiments and develops unique pieces through his raw and intuitive methodology. He has worked for various international labels and clients.
