Digital Character Design: Draw Protagonists with Personality

“You did it! I do hope you enjoyed this course, and now I hope you're ready and excited to take a shot at it and develop a unique and expressive character for yourself. Use the Line of Action to establishing the personality of the character and finalizing the facial expressions and exaggerations in the right areas. I want to remind you to come up with your own idea and situation for your character. Remember to keep it simple without any backgrounds and maybe incorporate some sort of a prop. Think about your personal interests, think about colors that inspire you, genres you like. Putting a little of yourself in your artwork is always a good place to start especially when trying to come up with something original. There isn't a formula for character shapes but often sharper pointy shapes help define a character as a villain and softer rounder shapes can come across as friendly and inviting. Of course, this is just one example to keep in mind.

Story, story story. This is one of the most important aspects of what you are trying to achieve. An image that tells a story. So remember that you want to think about the scenario your character is in and what emotion you are trying to convey through them.
Don’t overlook weight and balance. This is how you ensure that your character has a good center of gravity and feels believable.
Keep in mind the importance of exaggeration in your facial expression. Remember that the face is almost always a focal point so be sure you give that area a little extra attention and thought.
Draw the different expressions from various angles. Remember to line things up using guides as I did. You want to make sure all the proportions match from one expression to the next.
It really has been such a pleasure sharing this creative process with you and I’m so excited to see what you come up with! I do ask that you bear with me as it can take a bit of time to get to your questions and provide feedback but I will do my best to offer some help for you to have a beneficial and enjoyable experience with this course. Remember to encourage one another. One of the best parts about taking courses like these is that you can receive constructive critique from fellow passionate artists. Provide input for one another and encourage each other to push through till the end! See you! ”
