About the final project for: Bookbinding of Your Artwork without Folds

Bookbinding of Your Artwork without Folds

“Now we have reached the end of this Domestika course. Let's see a summary of everything we have learned so far.

  • I began by sharing with you the sources of inspiration that I am passionate about in artistic binding. Next, we looked at the materials and tools we needed for the course and its main features. Later, we learned to prepare some images printed on rice paper and to tint and texturize the skin.
  • With all this, we began to work on the binding, we first saw how to join two elements to form what we call bifolios, and then we learned how to convert those bifolios into concertinas or a stitched book codex format.
Next, we understood the function of the covers to protect our binding. First, we first prepare some simple tapas for our concertina that we finish with skin. Then we went one step further by including another piece, the loin. Finally, we finished covering the body with stitched sheets, including the caps in the seam. With the project finished, you saw how this technique can be applied to any format of graphic work, and how with imagination and creativity, the supports and presentation can be adapted to different sizes and even play with perspective. Thus, you have learned one of the techniques that exist to present, preserve and protect graphic work, and present it in a graphic and creative way. Well, the time has come to say goodbye. From now on, any questions you have, you can ask me in the forum. I will also be happy to see and comment on your bookbinding project. Show me the result, following the process that I have taught you. Organize and structure it in a way that is understandable. Then post it so you can share it with the entire Domestika community. Thank you very much for being my student, I hope you have enjoyed doing this course as much as I did. I am looking forward to seeing and commenting on your progress. See you soon! ”

As a classically-trained bookbinder, Susana's mission has always been to expand accessibility to this art form by searching for more affordable techniques, in terms of both time and materials, which also lend a contemporary image to the artist's book, beyond that of classic bookbinding. Susana Domínguez's style is characterized by her drive to break new ground while defining her image and seeking solutions to the needs of modern-day bookbinding. She is constantly experimenting with different materials and techniques, learning from fellow artists, and often borrowing from other disciplines.

Her work has received awards in Spain and other EU countries. Since 2006, she has been teaching her craft alongside Guadalupe Roldán at the studio she founded: Códex. Their studio has become an international reference in artistic bookbinding and is a space for exchanging ideas and knowledge where many bookbinders and artists from different nationalities have honed their skills and explored their creative potential.
