Drawing Tutorial: Tips For Drawing Arms

Learn from scratch the tips of realistic drawing to draw an arm in pencil, with Shane Wolf

Artist Shane Wolf (@shane_wolf) specializes in dynamic figure drawing and painting and has dedicated over ten years to exploring and experimenting with this practise. The human body and its positions of torsion and movement are the main focus of his work. He exhibits his work globally and has won the Taylor Prize in Paris.

His knowledge of the human anatomy, along with his technical skills, allow him to create realistic figure drawings. In this tutorial, he works with a life model to give his tips for drawing arms:

1.Add curves to create a fluid and realistic shape

Study your model and the natural curves of their arms. A common mistake when drawing arms is to draw a stiff structure, but the human anatomy has many curves to it. You can draw a basic arm structure, and then add curves afterwards.

Although the curves you add may be subtle, they are really useful in adding grace and elegance to the arms of your figure drawing.

2. Introduce shadow shapes to the figure

Begin to introduce shadow shapes to the figure. Stand back and observe where the light hits and shadow falls. You can then start to block out these areas in order to build shadow shapes. Note the shadow shapes that will need to be darker than the others, like the creases of skin or folds at the elbow.

3. Add contour to build shape

Maintain the curvature of the arm and as you draw, continue to assess the model’s shape. Do the curves that you’ve added need further definition? Look at where the body’s curves sit and add contour to these areas. Build more curvature on the inside and outside of the arms to show muscle definition and be attentive to the shadow falling on these shapes too, making sure that they also follow the contours of the arms.

4. Apply these tips to the rest of the body

You can apply this rule to the rest of your figure drawing, and not only create shape and realism in the arms, but also in the rest of body.
