Learn the basics of watercolor painting with this free e-book from Domestika experts
Watercolor can be a perfect medium to awaken your creativity. You don’t need experience, and anyone who feels drawn to this technique can begin right away.
Domestika’s free watercolor e-book is a beginner’s guide that can help you make the most of this medium and reach your artistic potential. Get some essential tips as you read it, and discover why this discipline attracts so many artists. It will become a valuable go-to reference for revisiting the basics and making painting an enjoyable experience.

This is the first e-book created by Domestika and it is designed especially for beginners and anyone who wants to know more about watercolor. There are 24 pages dedicated to both theory and practice. Read on to learn more about it.
Basic materials and a watercolor tutorial
One of the key sections of the e-book is dedicated to materials. What brushes will you need? Which ones are our experts’ favorites? These tips will help you start your first exercises. Once you know what you need, make sure that you also look after your materials, as explained by illustrator Beatriz Ramo (@naranjalidad). Follow her tips, and your brushes will last you a long time.
After that, follow the tutorial included in the e-book and start practicing. Storyboard and watercolor artist Alex Hillkurtz (@alexhillkurtzart) suggests a simple color mixing exercise to help you overcome your fear of the blank page.

Key watercolor questions
Is it better to start with the background or the subjects? Can you make a living out of this art? What can you do to get over creative block? Ana Victoria Calderón (@anavictoriana) will answer all such questions. The painter and illustrator teaches several courses on Domestika and highlights the freedom that brushes and colors can offer you. After ten years working exclusively on this type of painting, you can trust she’ll have an answer to any of your doubts.
Get inspired and keep on learning
The e-book includes a large section of illustrated examples that will inspire you to find your own style. If you want to progress further, you will also find a list of seven online Domestika courses to allow you to learn at your own pace with the help of different experts.
The courses will allow you to illustrate nature, capture the essence of buildings, create portraits mixing analog and digital techniques, and experiment freely with colors. Access them directly from the e-book and develop your skills.
