Domestika Creatives: Birgit Palma

We talked to lettering artist and illustrator Birgit Palma about how she captures the essence of an idea in her typography
Birgit Palma has created lettering and graphic designs for clients such as Adobe, Samsung, and Coca Cola. But her path into design was rather unconventional, and it began with the video game Counter-Strike.
She welcomed us into her home and studio in Barcelona to share how she creates the lettering designs that have made her one of the city’s brightest and most sought after young designers.
At 12, when her father took away the family computer in a bid to curb her gaming obsession, Birgit decided to buy her own laptop. She earned the money she needed by writing reviews of products she’d never tried. Once she got her laptop, she would spend hours playing every day. However, when she realized she would never be the best of the best, her commitment to the game waned.
Eventually, she came across a tutorial for retouching photos which introduced her to the world of Photoshop. She was hooked. The computer literacy, resourcefulness, and focus that she had honed as a gamer helped her develop her craft quickly. It took her from her little hometown in Austria to New York and then Barcelona, where she would begin working at Vasava studio.
After working for studios in New York and Barcelona, Birgit decided to become a freelancer. She continues to collaborate with global brands and now teaches students, keen to follow in her footsteps.
