10 Year Anniversary: Over The Garden Wall
Discover the artists behind a fan favorite series for creatives and its impact 10 years later plus a new stop-motion short for the series that will be released on November 3, 2024.
Over the Garden Wallis a magical and slightly spooky animated series that has charmed viewers of all ages. Created by Patrick McHale, the show aired on Cartoon Network in November 2014. It was short with just ten episodes and each about 11 minutes long. But in that time, it tells a rich and unforgettable story.
The series follows two brothers named Wirt and Greg, who are lost in a strange forest called the Unknown. Wirt is the older and more serious brother, while Greg is younger and full of wonder, the naivety of youth still inside of him. Along the way, they meet Beatrice who is a talking bluebird and offers to help them find their way home.
Together the three characters travel through a world that feels like a mix of fairy tales, old legends, and mysterious folk stories. They encounter magical creatures, strange people, and eerie places that all have their own secrets and lessons.
The look of Over the Garden Wall is unique, thanks to a team of talented artists led by McHale. The art style is inspired by old American illustrations and has an old-fashioned, autumnal feel. Every scene is full of warm colors like deep oranges and reds to faded greens and browns, which makes it feel like you’re walking through an endless fall. The music which is a mix of folk tunes and soft, haunting melodies also adds to the mysterious atmosphere.
Though it aired for just a short time this series left a lasting impression on viewers. Fans loved its combination of cozy and spooky vibes, its beautiful artwork, and its gentle but sometimes bittersweet storytelling. The series has become a favorite to watch around Halloween or fall and it continues to inspire art, music, and stories that celebrate its charmingly eerie world.
On November 3, 2024 Cartoon Network and Patrick McHale come together once again to release a 10 year anniversary stop-motion tribute made by Aardman to the series on YouTube. Tune in and take a trip back to the unknown with some of your favorite characters!
