Upcycling Tutorial: How To Create a Makeup Bag With Your Scraps

Turn your leftover fabric into a chic DIY makeup bag with this easy-to-follow free tutorial

If you've ever finished a sewing project and found yourself with leftover material, don't toss those fabric scraps just yet! With a little creativity and some basic sewing skills, you can transform your leftover fabric into a stylish makeup bag. In this tutorial, we'll guide you through the steps to create a custom makeup bag using denim scraps. Not only is this project eco-friendly, but it also gives you a unique, personalized accessory.

Materials Needed:

- Denim scraps
- Cotton fabric for lining
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Sewing pins or clips
- Measuring tape
- Iron

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Prepare your fabric:

Start by gathering your denim scraps and other leftover fabrics. You'll need to cut two rectangles measuring 8 inches wide by 11 inches tall. These will form the main body of your makeup bag.

2. Create a template:

Prepare squares and rectangles in different sizes to use as templates for your scrap fabric. Arrange these on your denim pieces, experimenting with different designs and color combinations until you're satisfied with the look.

3. Assemble the bag pieces:

Once you've decided on a design, pin the fabric pieces together, keeping a seam allowance of about 1 centimeter or half an inch. Sew the pieces together, ensuring your seams are flat and clean. Press the fabric with an iron to smooth out any wrinkles.

4. Add the lining and waistband:

Cut two pieces of cotton fabric for the lining, each measuring 8 by 11 inches. If you have a waistband from an old pair of jeans, cut 6 inches from where the button is located and 3 inches on the buttonhole side. These will be used to secure the bag when it's finished.

5. Sew the bag together:

With the denim and lining pieces ready, place the denim inside the lining, aligning the seams. Pin or clip them together and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the lining. This will allow you to turn the bag inside out.

6. Finish the bag:

Turn the bag inside out through the opening and press it again. Sew the opening in the lining shut, then overstitch around the top edge of the bag to secure it. Attach the waistband pieces for closure, and your makeup bag is ready!
