5 Free Lessons To Start In The World of Photography

Start your photography journey with ease: Free lessons on camera sensors, lifestyle photography tips, manual settings, and professional lighting.

I should be upfront with my readers: free things don't last forever (if you have a partner and you want to keep them around... someday you will have to pay for dinner)! This free lessons will be open from the 24th of January to the 8th of February starting and closing at 00.00h both days.

And it goes without saying, you have to be signed in to Domestika to watch the free lessons and if you are signed in already you have to log in, and if you are logged in, you have to click on the free lessons, and if you already clicked on the free lessons you have to watch them...! It should all be understood by now. I don't want to hear one more word about it (and I'm sure you don't either).

5 Free Lessons To Start In The World of Photography 2

1. Sensors, Pixels and Resolution

Giulia Candussi (@giulia_candussi) will guide us through this free lesson in which we will uncover the charm of the digital camera in its basic form. But why should you listen to, Giulia out of all teachers? Well, if you didn't know, for starters she has worked for almost a decade as a photojournalist collaborating with local media, NGOs and international news agencies such as Getty Images. For the main course she has produced photo reportages about the migrant crisis from the border between Slovenia and Italy, the zika virus from the slums in the north of Argentina. And finally for dessert she has covered major news events such as the Brexit drama from London and Scotland, the Venice Biennale and Obama's state visit to Italy.

Given all those credentials, who wouldn't trust her teaching the basics of photography? I mean, cameras can't infect you with Zika or terrorize you in a US President's state visit... This should be easy, now!

“As we know, the size of a camera is not important, rather we will focus on the size of the sensor and the number of pixels that our images contain. In this lesson, we will understand what these scary terms mean and how they affect the quality of our photos. ” - Giulia Candussi

2. Lenses, tips and tricks

I there, I'm Julia Nimke (@julia_nimke) and whilst I was kayaking at 4 am to document the golden sunrise during a commercial shooting I found time to write on my friend's article... Well, no... it's still me writing! Julia is too busy and for good reason. She will also teach us a thing or two about lenses. Here's how she describes the contents of this free lesson (this time it is truly her talking):

“In this lesson we will talk about lenses. I will show you examples of when to use which lens. Let's delve into the characteristics of the wide angle, the 50 mm and the telephoto lens. I want to let you know that it is not necessary to have every one of these lenses. After I give you these tips you will know what type of lens might be suitable in what situation.” - Julia Nimke

3. Lens aperture

Debbie Castro (@debbiecastrow) specializes in photography lecturing. She currently writes classes and mentors students from all around the world. Additionally, her personal work has allowed her to have exhibitions in London, NYC and in Ireland’s photo-festivals. She has published a limited edition book called "Who gave you the roses?". She also has a Degree in Psychology and Psychoanalysis and a Master's in Photojournalism to add to her substantial credentials. So she will not only teach you how to set the proper aperture for each occasion but she could also psychoanalyze the heck out of you in the process: Do you feel vulnerable when your lens is wide open?

This is her introduction to the free lesson:

“Aperture has two functions: it allows light to enter the sensor through the lens and it plays a role in depth of field. Let's study what depth of field is and what to consider regarding the lens.” - Debbie Castro

4. Artificial Lights

Scott McDermott (@scott_mcdermott) is not only a cool biker looking dude as shown in the picture above, he also backpacked through the American West and trekked the Himalayas before spending the last 20+ years as a commercial photographer in New York City. So he is a cool biker looking dude without a bike!

After initially shooting sports, Scott's work eventually shifted toward the athletes themselves and portraiture. This led to photographing many of the best creative minds in Hollywood, the music industry and the worlds of business and government. His work has shown at solo and group exhibits and is held in collections internationally.

Here's how Scott introduces his free lesson:

“How many types of artificial light do you know? There are many of them! In this lesson, I will discuss the pros and cons of tungsten, HMI, fluorescent, LED, and strobe hot lights.” - Scott McDermott

5. Light and space preparations

Bob Wolfenson (@bobwolfenson) was born in 1954, in São Paulo, where he lives and works. From the beginning of his career, at the age of sixteen, to the present day, Wolfenson has worked with different genres of photography. As one of the national references as a portrait artist, nude and fashion photographer, Wolfenson moves between his artistic projects and advertising. His most prominent exhibitions took place in influential Brazilian institutions, such as the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP). We had to track Bob down to teach this free lesson:

“There is a quote from a great photographer that I admire a lot, Arnold Newman, that a photographer's job is 90% moving furniture and 10% photography. What does it mean? That, in general, you really need to prepare before taking any picture. You have to drag a sofa or a piece of furniture, you have to change a light..." - Bob Wolfenson

This is it for today's free lessons! But don't panic just yet, there are also paying options:
