Crochet Tutorial: how to read a pattern

Learn how to read the symbols on a crochet diagram and understand the pattern with Steel and Stitch
The patterns and symbols on a crochet diagram can be intimidating to the beginner. However, they are much simpler than they appear.
In this tutorial, Emma Friedlander-Collins, also known as Steel and Stitch (@steelandstitch), teaches us how to decipher a crochet diagram, reveals what each abbreviation and symbol means, and tells you how you can use this useful tool in your next design.
Here are some of the basic abbreviations used in a typical crochet diagram:
CH - Chain stitch
SS - Slip stitch
SC - Half stitch
DC - Garter stitch or stockinette stitch
() - Perform all instructions within the parentheses for the same stitch. This can be in a corner-to-corner or crochet stitch.
** - Repeat the instructions between the stars. The diagram will indicate how many times you need to repeat this.
Yarn A/B/C - Indicate the colors to use in case you don't have a specific one.
