Mastering Acrylic and Bio-Resin: Top Tips for Creating Modern Decorative Objects

I'm Phil Cuttance, your friendly instructor from the course "Decorative Object Design with Eco-Resins," and today I'm sharing my top tips for using acrylic and bio-resins to create stunning pieces that will elevate your design game.

Choose the Right Resin:

Selecting the appropriate resin is crucial for achieving the desired results. Acrylic resin offers clarity and durability, making it perfect for creating sleek, contemporary designs, with an opaque finish. On the other hand, bio-resins, partly derived from natural sources like plants, provide an eco-friendly alternative allowing you to create transparent and translucent objects. Consider the characteristics you want in your final piece and choose your resin accordingly.

Experiment with Pigments and Dyes:

Adding colors to your resin creations can bring them to life. Explore a variety of pigments and dyes to achieve vibrant or subtle effects. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions when working with additives and aim for a consistent mixture to avoid unwanted streaks or clumps. Most pigments will only work with either Bio or Acrylic Resin, so be sure to check which type you need.

Master the Mold:

A well-crafted mold is the foundation of a successful resin casting. Making your own molds is easier than you think! In my two Domestika courses I show you how to make your own DIY molds in easy-to-find materials, using surprisingly simple techniques! You can also use silicone molds for their flexibility and ease of use. Consider Experimenting with different shapes and sizes to push the boundaries of your creativity.

Mind the Mixing:

When working with resin, accuracy in measuring and mixing is essential. Use calibrated mixing cups or digital scales to ensure the proper resin-to-hardener ratio. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for curing time and temperature, as these factors can greatly impact the final outcome. Keep in mind that patience is key; rushing through the mixing process may result in bubbles or incomplete curing.

Eliminate Bubbles:

Bubbles can be a common challenge when working with resin. To minimize their presence, stir the resin slowly and avoid aggressive mixing. Applying heat through a heat gun or using a torch can help release trapped air bubbles in bio resin. Before pouring you can try and eliminate any remaining bubbles by banging the mixing container on the table you are working on; this forces the bubbles to the top of the mix where they will pop. Alternatively, you can try using a vacuum chamber to remove bubbles before pouring the resin into the mold.

Finishing Touches:

Once your resin has cured, it's time to refine the piece. Sometimes you will have to sand any rough edges. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper and gradually move to finer grits for a flawless finish. I don’t sand the faces of my cast objects; leaving them as they came out of the mold. Remember to wear protective equipment such as a mask and gloves during sanding to avoid inhaling fine particles.
