One of the best courses I've ever done. For the first time, I understand the creative process a designer does.

This was a very informative course from an artist who creates incredibly appealing work that fits the description of the types of images that are very much in demand in today's entertainment landscape. The teacher explains his craft very well while sharing his philosophical thoughts on the art making process with great depth and eloquence. One of the best courses I've taken on this platform. I highly recommend.

I've been working as a designer and illustrator for 5yrs now and Nicholas has taught me a lot in this course in the ways of generating ideas and creating a cohesive character design. It's all in the details! He encourages artists to find what's interesting to them, to speak to their interest through their character design work, and build upon that interest with solid techniques of developing imagery surrounding the central ideas and themes of a character. I'll be revisiting this a lot for sure!

I've followed his artwork for a long time, and I always wanted to learn his process. I use Clip Studio Paint since I don't have an iPad, and I was still able follow along! Nicholas isn't just a great technical teacher showing you every trick up his sleeve, he's also inspirational and makes the task of character designing feel like such a wonder!
Procreate isn't super necessary, as long as the program you use has some good brushes, and the basic masking and adjustment tools.

Been following on social media for awhile and always liked the art. I figured I would give this a shot. I'm glad I did. This was a fun course and I hope there is more to come.

Good for beginners but lacks some aspects on how he do things and he didnt show how he draw from start to finish. I wish he did.

Wish there was more breaking down of how to create a pleasing gradient with his layer mask technique, how he controls ambient occlusion by erasing back into the areas of shadows, and some of the technical stuff that was skipped over in the edit for sake of time. Wish we got to see him paint the hat from scratch as it was a highlight of the final design. Wish that he gave as much time to his over the shoulder process as he did the idea and fundamentals he blocked out at the start of the course.
