Learn About Design Process with Jan Wilker and Take His Course for Free

Jan Wilker is co-founder and creative director of karlssonwilker, his independent multidisciplinary design studio in New York City. Jan would like to personally guide you through his favorite creative process, in which new and surprising ideas can be generated.
Are you interested in design and finding ways to activate and improve your creativity?
Simply respond in this forum thread to the following four prompts:
- Briefly state why you want to participate in this special opportunity.
- Share three projects from your portfolio. (You can upload images to this same thread or post them as projects on Domestika and share the link in the comments.)
- Tell us your favorite joke.
- Tell us where you currently reside.
Sign up until February 23, 2021.
Jan will then select ten lucky participants to work with him on a special design process assignment, where the results will be used in his upcoming Domestika course.
And of course, the selected participants will also be able to take his course for free when launched later this year.

ProI would be very interested in participating in this experience. I am a bicultural teaching artist and dreamworker (I work with dreams and nightmares through the arts and my background is in USA & Japan).
1. Why I want to do this: I am passionate about learning and am eager to explore design from this perspective, which is very different from my background in the fine arts.
2. I am attaching 3 examples of recent dream related art below. My favorite media are the book arts and now, I am exploring virtual reality. (See the comments section for the other 2 examples)
3. Favorite joke: What did the alien say the first time he tried Japanese green tea? ET (bilingual pun in Japanese & English E= ii (いい) which means "good". T= Tea. Good tea.
4. I live in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA.

ProHi, I am a graphic designer and illustrator and I live in Greece. I would love to participate in this project for learning purposes.
As for my favorite joke can't think of any right now. :(

ProI would like to participate because I'm curious as hell. And this year I'm developing myself creatively and want to reach new heights. Process determines your results so if you have a new process for me I'm all in. After 20 years of being a web designer I decided to go into illustration. But I'm learning that it is still a design process when you make art and develop concepts for packaging, logos, books, tattoos, storyboards, everything really.
Below I've included some recent experiments in illustration and some pages from my first illustrated book I released last Christmas. You can sample it here: http://bit.ly/willsanta.
Joketime! "How to Catch an Elephant"... First, you dig a big hole. Then, you fill it with ashes to the very top. Line the perimeter of the hole very carefully with peas and of course make a trail of peas to the elephant. Then you wait. And when the elephant comes to take a pea you kick him in the ash-hole!! : D
(My dad told this really well when I was a kid and we all really loved it.)
I'm an American living in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

HI there!
I would be thrilled to participate in this opportunity as this year I am changing career paths to focus on Art & Design. Having worked for a couple of years in Communications and PR, I feel the need to return to my true passion – which is creation in all forms. I have started working on my art but this year I want to focus on design as well. Although I studied Industrial design in College, I never worked in this field. Being able to participate in this project, would allow me to reconnect with design, its different processes and to get one step closer to my dream.
Please visit the following link to see 3 of my drawings: https://www.domestika.org/en/projects/1087182-life-is-art?success_and_share=1
In terms of jokes.... I am more of a spontaneous joker – don’t really have a list of existing jokes. I find humour in everyday things and life’s little setbacks.
In terms of location, I live in Paris 😊
I hope we get to collaborate together in this adventure! In the meantime, wish you all a great day!!
Au revoir !

Hi all!
I'm always open to new ideas and like all creatives, I get a little frustrated when every time I begin a new project. So tuts like this can help us out along the way.
Here's my joke :)
“Q: What’s the difference between England and a tea bag?
A: The tea bag stays in the cup longer.”
I line in Istanbul/TURKEY
You can find 3 examples of my work attached.
Cheers!

Hello!
Hmm... First of all, I think I would like to participate in this because it doesn't sound like something that I would normally do, so I suppose I see it as an opportunity to step out of my comfort zone. For the past year I'm in the middle of changing my career from being a kindergarten teacher to something I can't quite determine yet but it surely includes art, product design and woodworking. In this new beginning of mine I need some mentoring and perspective that could unlock my creative thinking.
I live in southern Greece, a country that seems to me so unpredictable that beautiful and scary is at the same time.
Favorite joke? Well, I don't think I have a favorite joke, but I laugh a lot with everyday things that surprise me in a funny way. For example, I laughed a bit before when I read that sharing a joke is one of the four prompts to participate!
So, here are three of my woodworking designs that I recently created:

Would love to participate - always looking for ways for people to step out of their comfort zone. I challenge myself all the time and have made many 'career' moves. Now I focus on empowering others by teaching and helping others create and become entrepreneurs

Why i want to participate? It would be a big help for me because as of now i was new in UX Design career and as of now i was enrolled in Introduction of UX Design course by Ethan Parry(Domestika). i just want to learn everything from something and learn something by everything and i really love to design for the customer that you can see them achieving their goal or objective.
My Work: (Portfolio)

2.) Personal Site
Favorite Joke:
" Did you hear about the monkeys who shared an Amazon account? They were Prime mates. "

1. I want to participate because I feel like a big fraud.
2. Three projects. These are my most recent images.
3. My favourite joke. Hmmm..... that would be a cartoon by James Thurber which I first saw when I was a child, where two people are swordfighting. The enthusiasm and the surprised look make me laugh, even though I feel I shouldn't laugh. I've uploaded it after my three projects. I guess it might be called "Touche".
4. I reside in Australia, on a custard apple farm, which is situated between Byron Bay and Nimbin.
This was fun, so thank you!

Hi Jan and team!
I'd love to participate as I am already an established animator by trade, but have been running my own online academy for the last 3 years, and want to create an amazing brand identity for it. I'd really benefit from your insight and approach to a process like this, and feel that under your mentorship you could guide me through the stormy seas that are design choices..! I've attached some images from my current designs and work within the site, as they are both recent projects and form a snapshot of where I'm at right now.
I produce all the work myself, from design, to build, to animation, to marketing. As much as I enjoy this process, I feel I could improve the design of the site and its identity, and create a more cohesive experience through my choices. You can see the current website at: www.adamsanimationacademy.com and my personal work at: www.adamoliver.com where you can see sketchbook samples.
Joke time: What's the best cheese to coax a bear out of a cave? Camembert (please make sure you put on your best French accent when saying the punchline aloud)
I currently live in Manchester, UK (and no I didn't vote for Brexit..!)
Thanks for your consideration.

ProHi, folks!
I would be glad to participate in this opportunity because I am always eager to learn new things :) I am a product designer UI/UX and I would be more than happy to have the chance be part of this adventure and this project to learn from the best and improve myself as a designer and creative.
You can see below 3 projects from my portfolio.
In terms of jokes I am not an expert but here one
What do you call a boomerang that doesn't come back? A stick.
In terms of location, I live in cold Estonia

Dear Jan,
Thank you very much for letting us take part of this fantastic opportunity!
1. I would like to participate as I am seeking to further my knowledge in the area of Design.I have recently been made redundant as a result of the worldwide pandemic and I take it as a sign to change my career and develop my interest and passion for Art and Design.
2. My works are of posters I made while working for a charity a few years ago. I really enjoyed making them.
3. There are too many jokes for me to pick a favourite one, but here is one I know:
What did the Buddhist say to the hot dog vendor?
- Make me one with everything.
4. I currently reside in London, UK

First of all, thank you Jan and Domestika for creating such an interesting opportunity for all creative enthusiasts out there! It would be great to learn from a design mentor whilst collaborating with people from different backgrounds, this would really help with building new connections and also widen our horizons.
1. Hi, I'm Isha, a recent communication design graduate. Since college, I have been a huge advocate of design and its role in our everyday lives and I aim towards utilizing design as a tool to solve real-world challenges. Therefore, this project would provide me with an opportunity to hone my design abilities and resolve a challenge with different people from across continents. I would also get a platform to share and discuss ideas, earn a global perspective on the problem, and actively learn from my teammates while working across multidisciplinary teams.
2. Attaching a few projects that I have worked on. My life and the things around me inspire my work, I also make it a point to combine my hobbies or interests with my work.
If you like my work and would like to see more of it or read up on my process about any of the projects mentioned below, please check out my portfolio https://www.behance.net/ishapednekar
3. This is a joke I heard recently and has been my favorite ever since.
'You know what they say about cliffhangers…'
4. Lastly, I am from Mumbai, India.
Thank you, looking forward to the results!

Hi I am Isa. When I was younger I could not attend any course in art, illustration or design and I kept on drawing as a self-taught, all I know about design is from "The design of everyday things" by Donald A. Norman. Why I want to partecipate to this course, I say why not? Never miss a good chance of learning something different. In my life all I have learnt I used it, soon or later.
Here is the link to my porfolio: https://www.domestika.org/en/delgobboisa/portfolio
My favourite joke:
A woman sits in a diner. A cat comes in, buys a chocolate ice cream and leaves.
The woman is totally astonished, “Wow – that was unusual”.
The diner manager agrees, “That’s right. She’s never asked for anything else but strawberry before.”
I'm from Rieti, Italy.

THE WHO & THE WHY |
I am Alkawthar Alshams, a Senior Graphic Designer at Habbar Advertising Agency. Enthusiastic about exploring the potential of visual communication, through undertaking design-oriented multidisciplinary challenges. It always fascinated me how the design process ultimately controls the final outcome. Giving the same brief to ten different creative people, will generate ten unique outcomes! It is astonishing how the experiences every individual has lived wires their brain differently, thus leading to taking a personal approach. I believe the core of an effective design is a reflection of an efficient process. It would be an honor to understand the underlying paths towards more creative discoveries with Mr. Jan Wilker. Not only to nourish the creative process for design but also for life as a whole!

I would like to participate to learn more about the creative process in general as well as to explore the areas of where I get stuck in the process. I am currently working on 1) designing a monthly course on exploring art as a wisdom way of knowing; 2) incorporating more art into my current teaching and facilitation of spiritual direction and practice thereof; 3) working on a small series of mixed art; and 4) setting up an art workshop space in my home for offering small group workshops.
My favorite joke is: How many Episcopalians does it take to change a light bulb? Two. One to put in the light bulb and one to make the martini's.
I live in Sylmar, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley. Sylmar means "sea of trees" ... it once had the largest olive ranch, owned by a Japanese man, in California and many old, old olive trees are sprinkled throughout Sylmar.

Hola,
I am fascinated by process and ways of working, what better way to explore this then potentially working with the likes of yourself and nine other like minded creatives. Multidisciplinary approaches to work is for me the future of creativity and removes all limitation. I would relish the chance to see your creative process first hand.
I live and work in Middlesbrough, UK (if you do some research there are plenty of jokes to be had).
The following examples from my portfolio are all self initiated works labeled Anti-Graphics. The aim is to extend on the standard design process and explore creative destruction. This has been done in Bothe physical and digital ways. Placing work in concrete, ice and a trifle (with a cherry on top, obviously) and also rewriting the code of digital files.
I hope you enjoy my work, more to be found here if you are interested blankspacecraft.co.uk

Hi! Thank you for considering me for this exciting opportunity.
Why
I share your goal to "work with daring clients on uncommon outcomes." I combine my strategy expertise and design skills (hand-drawn and computer) to help progressive advocates choose the best ways to affect change. Many of my clients are advancing change for animals. I also speak and write on behavior change marketing. I am considering creating a graphic-style book on behavior change marketing for nonprofits.
While I have a clear process for strategy, I don't have one for design. I'd love this chance to define how to approach new projects in ways that are creative, effective, efficient and inspiring.
What
See examples of infographics, my main focus, below, please.
Joke
Oooo, I'm fun but not funny. Since you like to cook and you also work with words, I'll share this online find. It made me laugh, even if it's a little silly.
My neighbor texted me, "I just made synonym buns!"
I texted back, "You mean like grammar use to make?" I haven't heard from her since.
