Cookie Decoration Specialization

Final Project: Your Signature Cookie Collection Objective Design and produce a cohesive collection of decorated cookies that combines technical skill, personal expression, and thematic storytelling. This project brings together the techniques explored throughout the course and transforms them into a creative, edible showcase of your voice as a visual artist. Project Description This final project marks the culmination of your creative journey with Lili Cuéllar, Willie Soto, Hani, Rachel Levesque, and Liz Shim. Throughout the course, you’ve discovered diverse ways to express ideas through cookies—ranging from royal icing precision to expressive watercolor techniques, from whimsical buttercream figures to custom cutters and illustrated designs. Now it’s your turn to apply these skills to develop a unique cookie collection that tells a story, evokes a mood, or reflects a personal aesthetic. More than a technical exercise, this project invites you to explore the emotional, visual, and conceptual power of decorated cookies. You’ll also reflect on the influences and inspirations that have shaped your approach, just as each expert did when sharing their creative universe. Whether your collection is playful, elegant, minimal, or bold, it should reflect who you are and what you’ve learned—visually, conceptually, and technically. Project Components 1. Concept and Theme • Define a clear and consistent idea to guide your collection. • Your theme could be emotional, visual, narrative, seasonal, or character-driven. 2. Techniques and Execution • Apply at least two decoration techniques explored in the course (e.g. royal icing, buttercream piping, edible watercolor, custom cutter design). • Focus on precision, layering, and consistency across the collection. 3. Visual Style and Aesthetic • Use colors, composition, and details that express your personal taste and artistic identity. • Reference visual influences and inspirations that helped shape your designs. 4. Presentation and Documentation • Photograph your cookies in a way that supports your concept and visual storytelling. • Pay attention to lighting, background, and framing for a clean and cohesive presentation. Development Steps 1. Define Your Concept Choose a central theme or idea to guide your creative direction. 2. Collect References and Build a Mood Board Use visual research to define your aesthetic and spark design ideas. 3. Sketch Your Designs Plan the layout and decoration for each cookie in your collection, including color palette and technique choice. 4. Choose or Create Your Cutters Select shapes that support your theme or make custom cutters to match your concept. 5. Bake with Consistency Prepare your cookie bases, ensuring evenness in size, shape, and surface texture. 6. Decorate the Cookies Apply techniques thoughtfully, taking your time with each layer and detail. 7. Photograph the Final Work Create high-quality, well-composed photos that highlight your cookies and the concept behind them. 8. Reflect and Prepare the Presentation Review your work and write a short paragraph that explains your theme, process, and artistic choices. Final Deliverables • A themed cookie collection of 3 to 5 decorated cookies. • Application of at least two techniques from the course. • 3 or more high-quality photos, including: • One group shot of the full collection • At least two detail or individual cookie shots • A short written description (150–200 words) explaining your theme, inspirations, and how the techniques were applied. This project is your first step into the world of expressive cookie design. By combining storytelling, technique, and visual creativity, you’ve created more than just a set of desserts—you’ve built an edible art piece that reflects your growth, identity, and imagination. Let this collection be the foundation of many more creative projects to come.”
