About the final project for: Specialization in Creative Botanical Mixed Media Techniques
Specialization in Mixed Media: Creative Botany
“Final Project: Hand-Grown Garden – Complete Botanical Craft Collection Objective Create a personal exhibition that celebrates the power of botanical handcraft, weaving together everything you've learned into a poetic, cohesive narrative. Through careful observation, technique, and patience, you'll transform nature’s fleeting beauty into lasting pieces that reflect your voice and vision. Project Description This is your chance to bring together embroidery, natural dyes, flower pressing, and stained glass in one unified, expressive collection. Inspired by the creative processes of Olga Prinku, Gina Sánchez & Miguel Ubaldo, Fiona Luciani, Camila Hurtado, and Molly Jackson, you’ll develop a multi-format botanical series that speaks of impermanence, wonder, and the intimacy of working with your hands. From translucent petals to handmade pigments, you’ll document and craft a collection that feels alive, meditative, and deeply personal. Project Components 1. Botanical Embroidery Piece • Create a delicate flower-on-tulle embroidery that introduces your botanical world • Focus on composition, color, and storytelling through natural textures 2. Homemade Ink and Watercolor Kit • Develop a personal palette of botanical dyes and inks • Include color swatches and notes on extraction and application techniques 3. Artistic Herbarium • Design a curated herbarium showcasing the plants used throughout your collection • Add notes on seasonality, meaning, and personal symbolism 4. Pressed Flower Collection • Organize a series of pressed floral compositions by style, method, or narrative purpose • Explore gold leaf, composition, and layering techniques 5. Botanical Stained Glass Centerpiece • Create a glass artwork inspired by your favorite natural forms • Use Tiffany-style techniques and let light, color, and symbolism shine Steps for Development 1. Define a personal theme or seasonal story that connects each piece 2. Source and press your plants or flowers with care and documentation 3. Experiment with each technique and record your learning process 4. Assemble each piece with consistency in tone and visual language 5. Prepare your exhibition materials: texts, mockups, and high-quality photographs Final Delivery • 5 complete handmade works combining all techniques • Visual documentation of your process and materials • Botanical herbarium with species data and notes • Professional-quality portfolio ready for exhibition or personal brand use This project is more than a collection—it’s your garden made by hand. Through thread, pigment, glass, and pressed petals, you’ll tell stories that live beyond the seasons. You've not only learned to preserve beauty, but to give it new life. Let this body of work mark the beginning of your ongoing dialogue with nature, creativity, and slow, intentional craftsmanship.”
