Sculptural Paper Techniques Specialization

Final Project: Build a Paper Art Collection for Visual Storytelling Objective The goal of this final project is to apply the full range of techniques you've explored throughout the specialization to create a cohesive paper art collection. This collection should express a story, atmosphere, or central theme, blending sculptural, illustrative, and interactive or environmental elements. The result could take the form of a personal exhibition, a creative window display, a conceptual book, or an immersive set. This project is your opportunity to synthesize everything you've learned into a professional, expressive, and multidimensional work. Project Description In this project, you will develop a collection of at least three paper-based pieces that work together to convey a single concept. Each piece should reflect a different format or function: 1. One sculptural piece: a three-dimensional paper object or form. 2. One illustrative piece: a visual composition, collage, or flat-layered artwork. 3. One interactive or environmental piece: a set design element, installation, floral or wearable component. All elements should connect through a shared visual language or narrative. You will also develop a written concept or storyboard that explains the theme or story behind the collection and document your creative process with sketches, tests, and photographs. If desired, you can complement the project with a short video or photo essay that shows how the pieces come together in a space or sequence. Project Components 1. Concept Development • Define a theme, message, or narrative that ties the collection together. • Decide what kind of story you want to tell—literal, emotional, symbolic, or abstract. • Gather visual references, materials, and inspiration for the tone and direction of the collection. 2. Design and Experimentation • Create sketches for each of the three pieces. • Explore different paper types, textures, and structures. • Test techniques such as cutting, folding, layering, building, and color application. 3. Production of the Pieces • Build your sculptural piece with attention to form and presence. • Develop your illustrative piece with strong composition and detail. • Create your interactive/environmental piece with spatial or functional impact. 4. Narrative and Presentation • Write a short text that explains your concept and how each piece supports the narrative. • Assemble the collection in a way that shows its coherence—through layout, display, or sequence. • Document the process with images of tests, sketches, and in-progress work. • Create a short video or photo series that captures your collection in action or context. Step-by-Step Process A) Inspiration and Theme • Choose a story or atmosphere that you want to evoke. • Collect references (colors, forms, moods) and define your tone. B) Sketch and Plan • Draw each piece: sculptural, illustrative, and environmental. • Plan materials and techniques for each one. C) Test and Explore • Cut, fold, layer, and experiment with formats and forms. • Try different textures and combinations until you find a direction. D) Create Final Pieces • Produce your three works with attention to detail, stability, and coherence. • Think of how they will be seen together—as a collection, in space, or in sequence. E) Document and Present • Take clear photographs of each piece and the collection together. • Write a concise concept text that introduces your story or idea. • Include sketches, tests, and optional video or photo essay. Final Delivery Your final project must include: • Three paper-based artworks, each with a distinct purpose: a) One sculptural b) One illustrative c) One interactive/environmental • A written concept or storyboard that connects the pieces into a single narrative or aesthetic. • Process documentation: sketches, test images, and notes from your experimentation. • Optional: A short video or photo essay showing your collection installed or in sequence. This is your moment to transform paper into a powerful storytelling tool—one that goes beyond decoration to evoke emotion, atmosphere, and meaning. Every fold, cut, and texture becomes part of a language uniquely yours. Let your collection showcase not only your technical mastery, but your creative voice as an artist and storyteller. Through thoughtful structure, tactile surfaces, and unexpected details, bring your ideas to life—one piece at a time—building a world others can see, feel, and remember.”
