About the final project for: Sustainable Stationery Design for Print

Sustainable Stationery Design for Print

“Congratulations! You have reached the end of the course. Thanks so much for joining me to shake up the stationery world. I would like to wrap up by sharing some final tips and advice on how to make the most out of your final project. As you work on it, make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It would be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell me if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your process and guide you better if you need advice. Sustainable Circular Design The top three most important factors to consider when applying the circular economy approach to develop your stationery are: material choice, design and end-use, and printing and distribution. By considering each of these three stages, you'll proactively be: using fewer resources and energy, eliminating waste and pollution, and reducing your carbon footprint to help tackle climate change.

Stationery Formats Before you start designing your stationery, you want to make sure the format sizes all work together as a set. A simple black-and-white drawing to scale, or physical paper cut-outs, will help to visualise the pieces together.
Paper Specification When you're ready to choose paper, consider the type of paper you'll use (i.e. uncoated, coated, recycled, embossed etc.), then choose by colour, and narrow it down further according to the available weights to fit the format. Finally, look for the eco-certification that aligns with your values and environmental goals.
Stationery Design When you're constructing the stationery design, think about how to make the design as sustainable as possible. To achieve this you need a design for multi-purpose, in order to give your paper product longer shelf life and save on resources. The design should also be minimal so that you use less ink. This can be achieved by choosing smaller type sizes or eliminating the use of full-bleed images or full background colours.
Sustainable Printing In order to help you choose the right printing service, look for a production process that has a sustainable intention to: use less resources and energy, and eliminate waste and pollution while at the same time being more carbon efficient.
Carbon Balancing By the end of the project, I’d love it if you could carbon balance your print production. One of the most cost effective and fastest ways to do this is either buying carbon-balanced paper, printing with a certified carbon-balanced printer, or quite simply calculating the carbon from any other paper purchase and offset the unavoidable emissions through the World Land Trust.
Most of all, make sure the project reflects the message you want to convey, the emotions you want to evoke, and that your personality really shines through.
I will continue to help you with your project by responding to your comments in the forum so be sure to send any progress photographs and share your final printed stationery. The forum is also a great place for inspiration and meeting like-minded creatives, so don't hesitate to comment on other people's projects and ask for feedback. I would also encourage you to see how much carbon you were able to offset through the production, so do share your World Land Trust certificates. Thank you again, and I’ll see you soon!”
