Pop-up Book Fundamentals: Storytelling with Paper and Light

“You have reached the end of this course! Thank you for making it all the way here. It has been an amazing experience for me to be able to share my process with you. It is now time to start working on your project if you haven't already. This could mean finishing the pop-up book you started while completing the exercises or you could start a brand new project! To help you, I will sum up here the main steps you need to follow to complete the project. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. References and Idea Gather reference images and ideas for your pop-ups. Decide on the scene you would like to make for each page. Look at different mechanisms and see which ones will work for your designs.

The Designs Use Adobe Illustrator or draw out your designs, making sure you keep the details simple enough to work with the pop-up mechanisms. If using the computer, print out your designs ready to cut.
Cutting Cut out your designs using a bone folder, scalpel and ruler. Fold along all of your crease lines before glueing.
Assembling Glue together individual pieces first, before adding them to the base page. Then, add your completed pieces to the base page and check that it opens and closes smoothly.
Book Binding Once all of your pages are complete, use the page join pieces to connect them together. Cut out a spine, as well as a front and back cover from grey board for the book, and attach to your cover paper. Attach your pages to the front and back cover – your book is complete!
If you wish to, add a cover design and make coloured gels from sweet wrappers to add some extra interactivity!
I can't wait to see what you have created! Upload your Final Project by clicking on ‘Create your project’. I’ll do my best to respond to each and every one of your comments as soon as possible. In the meantime, interact with the community and comment on your peers’ work! Goodbye!”

“Well done, you've arrived at the end of my Domestika course. I hope you've enjoyed all the tips and tricks I've shown you. By following along with the lessons, you've seen that creating a pop-up book is really accessible. The magic of these books is that they can evoke a sense of childhood nostalgia through the crafting process. while also evoking a sense of wonder through the interactive experience. Start by gathering visual references to create your ideas. Simplifying these through sketches will help you identify the shapes and silhouettes for your designs. Well, in my case, I chose the l...”
