About the video: Sketch and composition

Overview

“To begin with, I will make a first approximation to the drawing with a quick idea of possible paths. The idea is to create sketches in an agile way that include considerations such as the style of the letters and the composition of the piece.”

In this video lesson Santiago Arango addresses the topic: Sketch and composition, which is part of the Domestika online course: 70s-Inspired Lettering Design. Experiment with wavy lines, exaggerated proportions, and bold contrasts to create groovy letters inspired by the 70s.

“sketch and composition In this lesson we are going to start with the sketches. The idea is to have many different illustrations to explore different paths and compositions and do as many trials as we want. Almost all my work is inspired by music and for this one I chose "Stylo", by Gorillaz, as the main element of the design. Graphic Designer and Lettering Artist

Santiago Arango is a graphic designer from Medellín, Colombia, who loves letters and everything related to typography. He has more than a decade of experience as a professional designer and eight as a self-taught lettering artist.

Even before he knew how to properly write in his own language, he was fascinated by letters and their shapes, which he now considers the foundation of any visual identity, much like the bricks in a building. The bulk of his work has been centered around designing museum exhibits and cultural projects. His typeface design Oddity also won him bronze at the LAD Awards.
