About the final project for: Children's Book Illustration with Photoshop

Children's Book Illustration with Photoshop

“Thank you so much for taking my course. I hope you have found it inspiring. During the course, I showed you my techniques and workflow, but feel free to use whatever works for you best to create your own process. Let me show you an example of what I would like to see in your project course: The Inspiration First things first, go around the internet or take a walk to find inspiration. Think about what you want to create. Also, collect some fun textures.

Thumbnails Make some value sketches. Don’t worry if they look like make a mess, you will clean them up later.
The Sketch Pick one of the thumbnails you did before, and create a rough sketch without worrying about it to be exact at this stage.
The Main Character Think about what you want the main character to look like. Use image references to give him or her the aspect you are looking for.
Line Drawing Now you just need to outline a drawing and get it ready for the coloring stage.
Color, Textures, and Values Before starting to add color, prepare the layers in Photoshop. Once they are ready, start adding color to the background. Next, add the textures that work the best with the illustration. Finally, apply the basic values to build out the image.
The Illustration Start by rendering the background. Then focus on the midground and last but not least, work with the foreground and add the last details.
While making the project, try to stay true to your beliefs as an artist. I highly recommend you to be as disciplined as you can in order to get better results. Creating illustrations for children's projects might be challenging, but it’s also amazing. Give yourself the chance to have fun during the process. When you feel that your project is ready for me to review, click on “Create your project” and upload it. I will be giving you feedback as soon as I can. While you wait, I encourage you to share some tips, tricks, and feedback with your coursemates. I can’t wait to see what you have created. See you soon!”

“Final Project You're here, you've made it to the end of the course. In this lesson, I'll give you some tips to help you on your artistic path. When you're finding inspiration, it's good to remember artists who you admire. It can help you find techniques to incorporate into your work. Keeping a texture library is helpful because you can use natural patterns that you couldn't come up with when painting traditionally. Have fun when making value sketches. It's good to use large brushes because you don't want to be drawing, you want to be thinking. Explore and the story will come to you. A quick...”

Eric Castleman is a children’s book illustrator living in Montana who specializes in traditional painting techniques with digital tools. His interest in illustration started as a child and, having an artist for a brother and a sister interested in crafts, he was always creative growing up. He spent time drawing during school but didn’t consider art as a career until his wife, a painter, bought him a book on how to build a business from his passion.

Since then, Eric has worked for Highlights magazine, and The Monster Project, and has been featured by Kidlit411, Society of Visual Storytelling, and multiple art galleries. He works primarily in mixed media, integrating unique textures and light into his work.
