Lettering for Embroidered Patches: Make a Wearable Statement

“Thank you for joining me in this course! I hope you liked it as much as I enjoyed sharing some of the things I learned on my embroidery journey. Before finishing, I would like to remind you of the steps you must follow to complete your final project. Spend some time thinking about the word or phrase that you’ll use. Then, if it’s helpful, create a mind map or free-write until something jumps out at you! Create a mood board to help you decide on an overall idea for the design for your patch. Include lettering styles that you feel drawn to, color palettes that you love, and ideas for graphic elements you might want to incorporate into your design.

Sketch the layout of your patch, and map out where you’ll use each of the colors in your palette and how you’ll stitch each element.
Use your final sketch to create a template for your lettering using a premade font, or give hand lettering a try. Add hand-drawn embellishments to your word or phrase if you’d like. Finally, finalize your template and prepare your design for transfer by ensuring that your final template is straightforward to follow, with dark lines.
Transfer your design to fabric using the method that best suits your fabric type. Assemble your hoop.
Embroider the lettering for your patch
Add shading and any additional design elements.
Prepare your embroidered piece to be a patch. Begin by tidying up the backside. Next, tie and trim any loose threads. (Apply fabric glue as needed, depending on your fabric type, and allow it to dry. Be careful not to use too much!) Once dry, carefully cut out the embroidered layer.
Attach the embroidered layer to a felt backing layer using a line of split stitch or backstitch. Trim the felt into your desired shape and finish the edges of your patch as desired.
Attach your patch to an article of clothing using a simple running stitch.
Finally, I would like to invite you to participate in the forum since I will answer your questions and give you my comments. It is also a great way to meet people from all over the world interested in the same things you are interested in, join the conversation! ”
