Delicate Watercolors for Narrative Illustration

“We have come to the end of the course. Thank you for having accompanied me! Hope you have taken a liking to it and feel ready to start your own watercolor illustration. Now is the time to prepare your final project. I encourage you to make your own illustration, taking the time to seek inspiration and find the colors you like. To help you, I leave you a summary of the different steps to follow below. Take care to document all the stages of your creation. I would like to see it in the presentation of your project. In particular, this will allow me to better guide you if you have any questions. Image search Start by choosing the animal you want to paint by looking for pictures and illustrations that inspire you (and which also help you understand the morphology of the animal). Include your mood board in your presentation so that we can see your sources of inspiration. For example, if you're using Pinterest, share the link to the boards you've created for the project.

The sketch Then make a sketch of your character using the reference photos found in your research. It is also at this stage that you will work on the floral and plant composition that will surround your character.
Watercolor Transpose your composition on watercolor paper and start by painting the silhouette of the character.
Then paint the costume and accessories, then complete with the designs you have chosen. Finally, add the flowers that frame your character.
Share your illustration Finally, scan or photograph your artwork for final Photoshop edits before sharing.
If this is your first time painting with watercolors, well done! I can't wait to see what you have created. Don't forget to share your final project with the community. For my part, I will answer your posts and questions as soon as possible. Also, I encourage you to watch what your comrades have been up to and to comment on their posts. Your opinions matter just as much as mine! And if you want to share your artwork on Instagram as well, don't forget to add the hashtag #CecileMetzgerDomestika so I can spot your posts. Thank you for taking this course. See you soon on the forum !”

After having spent some time living abroad, Cécile is now based in eastern France. Illustration is both a career as well as a lifelong passion. She works primarily in children's literature, but it doesn't stop there! Cécile has also created fabric designs for brands like Figo Fabrics, Atelier Coton, and Anthropolgie.
