About the final project for: Editorial Illustration of Characters in Gouache

Editorial illustration of characters in gouache

“We reached the end of the road. First of all, I wanted to thank you for taking my course. I hope you leave with the feeling of having learned a lot and, above all, that you have had as much fun as I did. Before we say goodbye, we are going to review the key phases of the project. I recommend that you choose to do a final project different from mine, so you can get all your creativity and make the most of everything you have learned in the course. When you share it, it would be great if you showed me an image of each phase and added a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. Choice of topic The first thing you are going to do is choose which scene and character you want to illustrate. Building on that, create a folder of visual references.

Sketch Once you are clear about the theme of your illustration, it's time to work on your sketch. Start by creating your characters, choose the ideal composition for your project and, finally, work on the final version of your digital sketch. If you have questions during this process, I'll be on the forum to help you out.
Get ready to paint It is time for you to print your final sketch and trace it to the watercolor paper. Attach it to a smooth surface with masking tape or washi tape. Finally, choose your color palette and mix with gouache, as I explained in Unit 4.
Let's get to work! Grab your brushes and gouache and start painting your final illustration. As you have seen me do, apply the masses of background color first and move on to the foreground elements. Remember that it is better to apply layers from higher to lower density, so as not to reactivate the lower layers. When you are done with the gouache, add the details to your illustration using your colored pencils.
Digitization Finally, scan and retouch your illustration in Photoshop, as I have taught you in the last unit. You already have it!
Now share your final project with all of us by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result of your illustration and the steps that have led you to it. I am looking forward to seeing your project and giving you feedback. I remind you that I will be at your disposal in the course forum to advise you and give you my opinion on your final project. I also want to invite you to actively participate in the forum, not only sharing your progress, but also giving advice and trying to help the rest of the community. It is sure to be very enriching for everyone! See you on the forum!”

“Final project It is the end of our course at Domestika. I hope you learned how to make an editorial illustration in gouache. Before saying goodbye I would like to do a little review of the steps we follow together to create the final work. First I introduced you to the materials we use to carry out the exercises and the final project. As you saw, to develop your creativity, you will not need a large investment.
