About the video: Introduction to Digital Mixed Media Collage

Overview

“When you say collage, a lot of people instantly think of the kind of collage they did at school, taking apart old magazines and gluing them back together and creating some sort of perspective. I think that's what a lot of art teachers at school use it for, to teach the principle of foreground, middle ground, and background. I will share with you how I developed my style of digital mixed media collage and why. ”

In this video lesson Petra Zehner addresses the topic: Introduction to Digital Mixed Media Collage , which is part of the Domestika online course: Artistic Mixed-media Collages. Create unique collages that are both vintage and contemporary, and blur the line between traditional art and digital illustration.

Partial transcription of the video

“Introduction to Digital Mixed Media Collage In this lesson, I'll tell you a bit about the types of digital mixed media collage I do. When I say collage, people often think about the collage you do at school, using old magazines or papers, tearing them apart, and putting them together to create an image with a foreground, middle ground, and background. A lot of teachers use collage to teach these visual principles. If you say you don't do that kind, people often think or assume that I cut out pretty things like butterflies or flowers and add them to an image. I tell them that it's not either...”

Illustrator and Collage Artist

Petra Zehner is a German illustrator and collage artist. After studying literature and linguistics in Berlin, Petra experimented with writing, photography, and illustration, which led her to study graphic design in London. Since then, she has moved back and forth between Germany, the UK, Malaysia, and Singapore, before basing herself in Paris. During this time, Petra rediscovered collage as a medium that combines all of her interests. For Petra, collage is also a metaphor for life as a whole, and the way we collect, mix, match, and make things our own.

Petra discovered that she didn’t want to work exclusively with traditional collage methods and created her own combination of analog and digital elements. She is the creative director and founder of Paris Collage Collective, a community that sets regular creative challenges to connect local and global artists, and encourage creative expression that goes “further than likes and shares on social media platforms”. Petra has also worked on various art projects, including Elleree, her own series of 365 images based on the same photo of an unknown woman taken in the early 1900s. She says that having to try new things repetitively in such a way pushes her to look at things with different eyes
