About the final project for: Artistic Mixed-media Collages

Artistic Mixed-Media Collages

“Congratulations, you have reached the end of this course! Thank you for joining! It’s been a pleasure working with you and sharing with you. Now, I hope you feel ready to make real your ideas by creating your own collages. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination guide you. If you trust your ideas, something amazing and unique will come true. Before we leave, and we say goodbye, I would love to show you an example of what I want to see for your final project. The Portrait Choose a photo you want to work with, be it a vintage photograph of your grandmother or a snapshot taken on a recent holiday. Then scan your photo at high resolution and remove any dust or scratches in Photoshop if necessary.

The Materials Pick materials that inspire and speak to you - old tickets, paper scraps, found imagery, snippets of texts, unpaid bills – and cut or manipulate them manually in any way you want. Scan those visual elements at high resolution and cut or manipulate them digitally in any way you want.
Your Story Think about the story you want to tell or the emotion you want to convey, and combine your elements in Photoshop. Experiment with layering, blending modes, and multiples.
I know that for a lot of people who are not familiar with Photoshop the idea of creating digital collages can be daunting. Don't be afraid though! We all started out as total beginners at some point. Also, don't forget that working digitally is very forgiving. That one beaten-up photo of your great-grandmother, no need to keep it behind glass somewhere, no need to cut it up either. Once it is scanned properly, there are a million things you can do with it, and a million ways to keep it alive. That’s the magic of this collage project, they give us the chance to keep alive, fun, and wild everything we want and love. You will see that once you start working digitally, it can be tempting to keep working that way. Please, don’t forget to share your finished process on the forum, if possible also share a bit of the story you are sharing. Besides, I encourage you to comment and share your questions and ideas with your classmates. I can’t wait to see what you have created. See you soon! ”

In this video, I'll quickly recap how to create your collages. You start by collecting and organizing materials, and scanning the ones you want to work with. Then you choose your portrait and prepare it. After that you pick a background, prepare it, and add it to your main file. The next step is to play with the composition and practice some techniques we learned in this course. In the end, you assemble your final piece and print it if you want. If you're ...”

Illustrator and Collage Artist

Petra Zehner is a German illustrator and collage artist. After studying literature and linguistics in Berlin, Petra experimented with writing, photography, and illustration, which led her to study graphic design in London. Since then, she has moved back and forth between Germany, the UK, Malaysia, and Singapore, before basing herself in Paris. During this time, Petra rediscovered collage as a medium that combines all of her interests. For Petra, collage is also a metaphor for life as a whole, and the way we collect, mix, match, and make things our own.

Petra discovered that she didn’t want to work exclusively with traditional collage methods and created her own combination of analog and digital elements. She is the creative director and founder of Paris Collage Collective, a community that sets regular creative challenges to connect local and global artists, and encourage creative expression that goes “further than likes and shares on social media platforms”. Petra has also worked on various art projects, including Elleree, her own series of 365 images based on the same photo of an unknown woman taken in the early 1900s. She says that having to try new things repetitively in such a way pushes her to look at things with different eyes
