Self-Intersecting Surface
A course by Saul Kim , Architectural Designer
About the video: Self-Intersecting Surface
Overview
“I will show you how I take my inspiration from a tangled wire to generate study models. I will be demonstrating how to manipulate a surface for it to intersect itself to create multiple layers of spaces. The same technique will be applied to different architectural contexts to iterate on the idea of self-intersecting surfaces.”
In this video lesson Saul Kim addresses the topic: Self-Intersecting Surface, which is part of the Domestika online course: Architectural Models with Rhino 3D and V-Ray. Transform ordinary spaces into unique, structural masterpieces using an experimental design method.

“In this lesson, I'll show you how I take the inspiration from a tangled wire to generate a self-intercepting model. As a practice, you can choose to use the same image that I've used as reference. or you can choose to bring your own reference for the design. Other self-intersecting reference images could be a tape, a film, or a rope. My inspiration came from a really common circumstance of a headphone being tangled in your pocket. I think it's interesting that I can abstract the wire into a single line that intersects itself multiple times. Now what I want to focus on is the moment of self-...”

A course by Saul Kim
Saul Kim is an architectural designer from South Korea. He’s been interested in art and technology since he was a child, and has always enjoyed making things by hand. Whilst studying for a degree in architecture at Southern California Institute of Architecture, he discovered a passion for experimenting with form. He went on to specialize in it as part of his master’s degree in architecture from Harvard Graduate School.
Saul currently works in the United States as a freelance designer alongside developing his personal design series, which explores the ideas of conformity and contradiction of architectural parts. His designs, which he shares with over 30K followers on Instagram, are inspired by daily life, and he is passionate about finding new ways to create form and space through architecture.
