“Influences In this lesson, I'm going to talk to you about my influences. One of the people who really inspires me is a painter who's painting now, Amy Sherald. You might know her from her incredible portrait of Michelle Obama, absolutely beautiful, and she also paints a lot of other stand-alone figures with very symbolic-looking in their clothes and the way they're conveyed. You can get a lot of inspiration by looking at how she makes simple shapes of people. Sometimes their clothes help make their shape, like a dress or something like that, and sometimes they're holding something, a thing ...”

Sarah Hand is a Virginia-based artist, author, teacher, and paper mache enthusiast. As a self-taught, lifelong maker of things, she has always been creative, but it was a puppet show which first sparked her interest in paper mache. The experience kick-started her career as an artist and has since taught children and adults alike how to express themselves through paper mache.

Sarah currently hosts paper mache workshops at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond and the Virginia Museum, of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited at several galleries, and she recently published a book with publishing group Quarto Creates in which she shares her step-by-step guide to using paper mache to create sculptures with personality.
