Paper Mache for Beginners: Sculpt a Colorful Character

“Well, here we are! You have reached the end of this course and I’m so glad we’ve gone on this little journey together! In this lesson, we are going to review the steps for your final project. Begin by design your character using shapes and adding details and notes until you have a fully realized drawing of your figure. After that, draw and cut out your character on the board, and create the shadow box in its body. And then, make the tiny sculpted dream.

Next, dive into the messy work of papier mache by tearing paper and making the paste. After that, cover your sculpture and let it dry. Following that, prepare your surface before painting and adding details. Finally, paint and attach the special dream in the niche in your character.
I can’t wait to see what you make. This process has many steps, but if you follow them, you will make something unique and special. Using the ideas in this course, you can try something totally different - what about a wolf with Little Red Ridinghood’s grandmother in the stomach? Perhaps a snake who has eaten a mouse! A chicken with an egg!
You might try color palettes that are subdued or very flat fields of paint with no extra texture. These figures are like shaped canvases for you to illuminate the way you like best! My job is to guide you, put you at your ease if papier mache is a new technique for you, and show you how it can be done. Whatever else happens will be a reflection of YOU! Let this class inspire your imagination and create your own small stories in papier mache. I promise this process will be worth it! Please be sure to share your work in the Domestika Forum. There you can receive feedback from your fellow students also taking part in this course. I will do my best to respond with my comments and input but please be patient, I am busy teaching and making my papier mache friends.”

First, we put together a Pinterest or image board full of people, creatures, shapes, patterns, and colors that inspire you. You had a quick overview of the papier-mâché process, and then using sketchbooks and inspiring imagery, I taught you about brainstorming ideas for your character and its secret dream. Next, you designed your character using shapes and adding details and notes, and ended up with a fully realized ...”
