Paper Playground: Create a Papercut Picturebook

“Welcome to the final lesson of this Domestika course. I hope that you’ve enjoyed all my tips and tricks to develop your paper playground. I also hope that you now feel inspired to create your own paper book dummies. I have been experimenting with paper formats ever since I discovered the magic of creating images with scissors, scalpel and paper folds. I showed you how to work inside and outside your sketchbook. For the final project, I will ask you to create a dummy of a silent book for children using paper cutting techniques. The first stage of the process is to plant a story seed in your sketchbook. In order to grow, a story needs three basic elements: a setting, characters and action or conflict. As you saw, I decided for my project to be titled "A Day at Home", and the character is a baby arriving in this new home. Next, create some double pages in your sketchbook to work on the architecture of your setting, the possibilities of expression and movement of your characters and your storyline. For this part, I showed you how to work on these aspects using simple paper cutting techniques.

Then we move outside the sketchbook, and start exploring some possible formats for your maquette. I showed you many possibilities but we studied in-depth three of them: a collection of folded and perforated cards, a pop-up accordion, and the tunnel book. But in the end, during the process, I experimented with another possibility: a hybrid between a tunnel book and a carrousel. I hope this inspires you to create your own format or experiment with existing ones.
I hope this method has helped you understand the story that you want to tell. The research, the chance to experiment inside your sketchbook and knowing the main basis of the story, enables you to create something different and new every time. After you’ve finished your dummy, view your work with a gentle gaze. Discover where your story seed takes you. Analyze in what way your mistakes have become ideas for original creations. In the creative process, every step has value. Working on something important to you will give you the power to go on. Give yourself the opportunity to explore your stories through papercutting. Also, don’t forget to participate in the forum. I will be there to answer questions and give some guidance. You can also give ideas or feedback to other members of the community. It has been great to share my work process with you. Thank you and goodbye! ”
