Book Cover Design: Illustrate Stories with Evocative Images

“Welcome to the "Final Project" section and thank you so much for taking this course with me and for exploring the world of book cover design. I hope now that you feel more comfortable with how cover design works in a professional context and that you’re ready to start building a portfolio of book covers to share with the world and potential clients. I am now going to show you how to share each step of your final project with the whole community. Don't forget that you can choose your own book, the one that catches your attention the most. Firstly, share what inspires you and what influences your style, the tone of your work as well as the cover of your book.

Then, show your reference material, like previous book cover editions, single objects from online images, old photos, etc.
Develop visuals from rough sketches to thumbnails and the full jacket rough.
It's now time to add colour to your illustration. I used watercolour painting, but you can totally go for another technique.
After importing your artwork into Photoshop, change whatever you want to reach your goal. Remember that you can work on each layer independently, completely change the colour palette and add textures. If you feel like it, you could also share the textures you used in this final assignment so that other students can get inspired by you!
The next step is overlapping the cover text, like so:
Finally, insert your work into a mock-up, to bring it to life. You can play with different background colours and points of view.
... And you are done! I am so excited to see the covers that you create on the forum and I’ll be sure to let you know my thoughts when I can, though please remember that I’m often busy with illustration projects. It’s also really important to share your work with other students, friends and other artists as giving and receiving feedback is a great way of testing the impact of your work. You can use the hashtag #OwenGentDomestika on Instagram to share your cover with the whole world. Don't forget to comment on other people's work on the forum and give constructive feedback to help them improve. Thank you so much for taking the time to come on this course with me and I wish you all the best in everything. Keep well, good luck with your work, and maybe see you next time!”

“Final Project Here we are at the end of the course. I wanna thank you so much for coming on this journey with me and exploring the world of book cover design. I hope that now you have a greater level of understanding and you're comfortable with what working with a client might feel like and you feel ready to start building or continue building your very own portfolio of book cover designs. I started by telling you a little bit of my story and how I got to the place I am today as an artist. I then shared some of the influences I have from poetry, music and the visual arts, and I also shared ...”
