“Supporting Characters In our last lesson, we learned all about creating our lead characters for our concept. Now, we're going to get into the equally important task of creating a cast of supporting characters for our leads. Why are supporting characters important? They're as important as the main characters, because main characters can only go so long. You can't really have everything shouldered by the main characters because sooner or later, the lead characters will get into a problem they can't get out of. They have to be saved or supported by another character. It's the way stories work....”

Butch Hartman is an award-winning cartoon artist from the United States. He has been a fan of cartoons, movies, and comic books since he was a child and grew up creating stories and shooting his own movies. He later went on to study at the art school founded by Walt Disney, California Institute of Arts. After graduating, he began his career in the television animation industry, working on the 1986 version of My Little Pony.

Since then, Butch has gone on to work for studios like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network on iconic cartoons including, Tom and Jerry Kids, Droopy Master Detective, Dexter’s Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, and more. His work has received multiple Emmy Awards and he himself has been nominated for several. Butch also created his own children’s app, The Noog Network, and has written and produced live action films, including one for his famous animated show, The Fairly OddParents. He has also grown an impressive social media following with over 800,000 subscribers on YouTube and 1.7 million followers on TikTok, and he hosts his own podcast, Speech Bubble.
