About the final project for: Expressive Manga Illustration in Watercolor

Expressive Manga Illustration in Watercolor

“Congratulations for making it to the final project part of the course! I hope that I have been able to give you some good insight on my process and general practices when working with watercolor. Now that you have seen my entire process from start to finish, it is time for you to create your own finished piece! For your final project, you will be painting the original character you created in Unit 3 in watercolor. By now, you should have a good idea of the visual features and personality of your character, so what you will do now is create a finished piece using them as your subject matter. The steps you should take to execute this project are: Create thumbnail sketches to come up with a solid composition.

Map out your colors.
Refine your linework.
Transfer the linework to watercolor paper and paint the piece using your linework, color map, and mood board references. Then, lay down the base layers.
Render shapes with shadow layers.
Further refine focal areas with more detail.
Photograph your painting and format it for web upload! When posting in the forum, I will respond with answers and feedback. However, please be patient with the response time, as I am often busy with other projects in my career. Your fellow students can be a huge resource to you as well. Be sure to give feedback, advice, and encouragement to your peers in addition to my own. Keep in mind that this is just a starting point to grow from. Being self taught, I have sourced my own information and learned many techniques through years of constant practice and experimentation. I hope this course has given you a head start and a good foundation to continue building upon. Through many more hours of practice and exploration, your process and medium will grow into something unique and personal to you. ”
