About the final project for: Realistic Chalk Pastel Portraits

Realistic Chalk Pastel Portraits

“We reached the end of the course. I hope you liked it and all this information is useful for you to make your own portraits in chalk pastel. I am going to review all the steps I have done to develop my project: Select the image Create the idea and look for an image that communicates what you want. You can use the same image that I selected to practice, but I recommend that you look for another or give it a personal touch so that it differs from the other works. If you need inspiration, I share with you 10 free sites with photographs to draw portraits. Once I had the idea and image, I carried it out. First pass the image to the sheet, it can be drawing directly, with a grid or tracing.

Skin tones and eyes I started by testing the skin tones, then I continued painting the eyes, basing with pastel chalk and detailing well with pastel pencil. Once I had the look, I won 70% of the drawing.
Then I painted the nose, remembering how I generated volume in the sphere and associating it with the tip of the nose.
Mouth and textures I changed the tones to give the mouth color and gave the texture by drawing each crack. Then I shaped its edges and above it painted its whiskers, starting from the dark and giving texture with light.
Fund I continued with the rest of the face, marking the beard and giving texture to the cheekbone. Then I explained how to generate an out of focus, placing importance on the edges and the background to achieve the light effect.
Finishing touches I made adjustments observing with different techniques: from the cell phone camera, between closing my eyes, the other way around, and comparing with the photo in an app. In addition, I verified that, mathematically, each shape, tone or value is respected and yes, the result is similar, confirms the theories and motivates.
Fixer and photo of the result Finally I fixed the drawing and took some good photos to show it in networks.
Sometimes it seems easier than it is, don't get frustrated, you have to learn from mistakes and have a tolerance for frustration. In this course, I taught you something very complex to draw or paint: faces. I lost the fear of being wrong or of painting darker or lighter, I continued until I found the ideal tone. Remember that if you make a mistake, you can always correct, but keep the drawing. My rule is that if you start it, you have to follow it until it is the way you want it. It is the moment that you start your project, look for something different, from the original idea, select the image, the environment, the colors and add everything you consider to the composition, look for it to convey what you have in mind. Share your final project with us by clicking on "Create your project" and as I did here, you can also share each part of the process. It is very enriching for everyone. And, if later, you want to share your work with everyone, post it on Instagram with the hashtag #MaxiBagnascoDomestika , so I can stay up to date. If you do the same image, it does not have to look like mine, we all have a different way of seeing and that will be reflected in the different projects. You can ask me any questions in the forum and I will answer them as soon as possible, bear with me, I am a demanding teacher because I believe that we can all get to do what we want, we just need to work, be willing and not give up! See you soon!”

“Final project Thank you for getting this far. During the course we saw everything you need to do a realistic portrait with pastel chalks. We saw color theory, desaturation, how to create volume with lights and shadows. Then we started working on our project and we did it in parts: eyes, nose, mouth and background. In each of these stages we worked with pastel chalks to add a base and then we added details with pastel pencils. Remember that the image you select is really important, it needs to have good light, good definition and to convey what you want, with expression and atmosphere. When ...”
