About the final project for: Decorative Techniques with Concrete

Decorative Techniques with Concrete

“Next, we are going to review the different phases to follow to develop the final project. Remember that, in addition to the video lessons, in the additional resources of the course you will find relevant support information for the mixes, mood board references, pages where you can get inspiration and tips for decorating your pieces. Ideation and mood board From the ideation process that you carry out, you will develop your final project; It begins by deciding the color palette, the texture, the use and size of the piece, etc. In our case, we made a marbled centerpiece that we showed you in Unit 3. Then, make a mood board in which you collect ideas of textures, colors and shapes to have everything as a reference during the creation of your piece. We have created several for the different aspects that we wanted to take into account when approaching our project.

Materials and tools After the ideation phase of your project, look for the materials and tools to carry it out. In Unit 2 we saw different types of materials and stores where to get them. Also find the mold for your piece. Remember that the basis of your project starts from choosing a good mold that suits what you want to develop as a final piece. Do not forget that it is important to grease your mold, as this will allow you to unmold easily.
Foundry Carry out your casting process as we saw in the lesson "Casting (concrete mixing) of Unit 3 and remember the ratio of two parts of cement to one of river sand and gravel mixture (you will add the water slowly according to how you see the consistency of your mixture: neither too soft nor too stiff) When your mixing paddle stands on it, you will know that it is ready to be incorporated into the mold.
Decoration technique and final result Choose one of the techniques that you have learned during the course to decorate your piece. We chose the marble to apply it to our centerpiece. If you are going to stain or carry out a marbling process, you must use a water-based vinyl pigment, this will allow you to tone the concrete mix and carry out its casting process properly. When you have your piece completely dry, remove the mold, smooth edges using the different types of sandpaper that exist and clean the surface removing dust and leaving your piece ready. Apply the sealer and you're done!
If a different idea came up in your ideation process, we invite you to apply one of the techniques learned about it and share your project with us. This is how our piece has been:
We invite you to put all your creativity into your project and share it with all of us by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result of your piece and the steps that have led you to it. It would be great if you showed an image of each phase of the process and that you added a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. So we can give you the best possible feedback. We want to thank you for wanting to learn with us different decorative techniques on concrete. Your imagination is the limit of what you can do with the pieces. Write us and send us photos of your projects and any concerns you have in the processes. Don't worry, we will try to get back to you in the shortest time possible. We also invite you to actively participate in the forum with all the students of the course. Let's comment and support each other, in this way we will all learn and improve our techniques. ”

“Final project We have reached the end of our course, and we love that you have accompanied us so far and that you were able to make a beautiful piece with your hands and that you show it to us in the forum. Now we will tell you the step-by-step of our course because we also want you to tell us your step-by-step in the forum. We begin our ideation process, imagining the final piece. We created a mood board where we identified textures, colors and shapes that would be part of this final project. Then we searched for materials and tools and the different molds that we would use to develop the ...”

Mother-daughter duo María Alexandra and María Camila–professional interior designers with a passion for handicrafts–are the founders of their own design studio and decorative objects brand La María Living. The two generations join forces and feed off each other’s creativity to bring objects to life, giving them a highly pleasing esthetic without forgoing functionality and everyday uses.

Inspired by macrotrends, they play with color, textures and artisan techniques to carefully craft their concrete products. Through this process they create their own worldview and express it through unique, timeless designs where concrete, thanks to its characteristics, is often the primary material used.
