Mixed Media Animation in Procreate
“Dear student and badass cyber pal, well done! You’ve reached the end of our little motion magic quest, and I honestly can’t tell you how thrilled and proud I am for you to make it here and for keeping me company. I know how time-consuming and frustrating it sometimes can be when learning something new and especially cel animation—it takes a lot of patience, practice, passion, and effort. Trust me. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to crash my Ipad against the wall and quit. But mastering something your gut feeling is longing for is so insanely rewarding, and this is honestly what life is all about. Having fun and learning and growing—and you might think, there’s an end station, but there really isn't. We all continue learning each day if we seek it—even the masters. So let me just applaud you for a few seconds here for your courage and I hope you’re celebrating yourself with me out there behind the screen, cause you deserve it. So let’s have a look at what magic we’ve worked on together. • We’ve looked at our different sources of inspiration, and influences. • We’ve looked at what animation actually is. • We’ve looked at the 12 Principles of Animation. • We’ve learned what a properly executed client brief looks like and how to communicate with clients. • We've planned, brand researched, found our story, sketched out our composition, created a fitting color palette, drew a storyboard, and took photos for mixed media animation. • We’ve learned how the animation timeline works in the app Procreate for Ipad Pro. • We've seen how to prepare for a bigger animation project finalized in Adobe After Effects. • We’ve also touched base on different social media platforms and how to post and share on these along with which content is good for which platforms. You’ve hopefully now attained some new skills and upgrades in your toolset, so you can start having some fun with traditional animation in Procreate. Learning how to do cel animation is a process. I recommend you to give yourself different tasks like picking a certain character and practicing to animate it—for example raindrops. Look at them and try to imitate their movements. You have to understand and observe your character before succeeding in animating it. To push yourself even further and to keep practicing the skills you've learned in this course, try and come up with imaginary clients as we did with Snape—or ask a friend or a family member or even a brand, if you can create something for them while they give you honest feedback. Being able to understand your client and in that way create a successful product is crucial. If you’re interested in creating more mixed media motion for practice, I’d recommend you to go and take some cool photos of whatever you find interesting. Maybe you already have a few nice ones from a vacation or of your granny or you could check out royalty-free photo sites like Unsplash and pick a photo from there. You can also draw your own background, just make sure to have a story in mind and create a storyboard beforehand—this will help you in your process. Have fun—an animation is a beautiful tool for a storyteller, and with today’s technology you don’t need much to start creating. Rough composition
