Domestika Diary: Apartamento 203

Founders of the architecture studio Apartment 203 Nathália Candelária and Henrique Diamantino share their creative routine during lockdown in Brazil

Projecting spaces and decorating them are tasks that require knowledge of the physical environment. Isolation, however, imposes a great challenge on creative people in architecture and interior design.

The founders of the studio Apartamento 203, Nathália Candelária and Henrique Diamantino have not only had to find solutions to the difficulties imposed by confinement in Brazil; they also moved apartments and had to do renovations at home in the middle of quarantine. In this Domestika Diary, the couple shares the routine they developed in these times and the challenges of living in a house while renovating it. The two also talk about how to maintain inspiration and creativity:

Nathália and Henrique say that the main change was in their morning routine: they get up very early to check on the building work before starting work. No matter how much of a mess they may be in, they always make time and space to eat every meal at the table, with the whole family. Breakfast, however, is improvised over the fireplace in the house. Toast with coffee is the starting point of the day's activities, which are split between the two of them and include looking after their son, Pedro, and the family pet.

Living in a house under construction makes them feel like their clients, an experience that has greatly expanded their empathy and understanding of the personal impact each stage of their work can have.

For some years now, both architects have been creating content for the Internet. Their intention with Apartamento 203 is to democratize and demystify the world of architecture and design. Both also defend the importance of routine as a ritual that transforms our relationship with the spaces we inhabit.
