How to Make an Easy DIY Carnival Mask

  • by Whitney Ryan @whitney_ryan

Learn how to make your very own mask for carnival, one that stands out and showcases your creativity!

Carnival is a time of color, music, and creativity! One of the best parts of celebrating is dressing up, and a beautiful mask can make your costume extra special. Instead of buying one, why not make your own? This simple DIY project is fun, easy, and perfect for kids and adults. Let’s get started!

Supplies:

- A plain mask
- Scissors
- Glue
- Paints or markers
- Glitter, sequins, or stickers
- Feathers, ribbons, or any decorations you like
- A hole puncher and ribbon or elastic

Step 1: Create Your Mask Shape

If you have a plain mask, you can skip this step! If not, take a piece of thick cardboard and draw the shape of your mask. It can be simple, like a classic Venetian mask, or something fun like a butterfly or cat. Cut out the shape carefully and make two holes for the eyes.

Step 2: Add Some Color

Now, it’s time to paint! Use bright colors, metallic paints, or even markers to design your mask. You can create patterns, stripes, or swirls. If you want a traditional look, gold and black are great choices. Let it dry completely before moving to the next step.

Step 3: Decorate Your Mask

This is where your creativity shines! Use glue to add glitter, sequins, or stickers. You can also attach feathers for a dramatic look or ribbons for a softer style. There are no rules—just have fun!

Step 4: Add the Final Touches

Use a hole puncher to make small holes on the sides of the mask. Thread a ribbon or elastic through so you can wear your mask comfortably. Adjust it to fit your face.

Your DIY carnival mask is ready, wear it with your costume and enjoy the festival. Whether you’re going to a parade, a party, or just having fun at home, your handmade mask will make you stand out!
