Illustration Tutorial: Warm Up Exercises to Create Nature Illustration

Master Dry Media Techniques to Create Vivid and Realistic Nature Sketches

Nature offers endless inspiration for artists, and creating lush, nature-inspired illustrations is a wonderful way to connect with the outdoors. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced illustrator, warm-up exercises using dry media can help bring your sketches to life.

Hi, my name is Alexandra Finley, and I'm an illustrator passionate about drawing and painting nature. Today, I’ll share simple but effective warm-up exercises that use tools like graphite sticks, colored pencils, and tombow markers to create vibrant nature illustrations.

Step 1: Start with Loose Gestures

Begin by observing the natural forms around you. For instance, I was inspired by an old tree with large knots and winding branches. Using a graphite stick, I captured the loose and flowing shape of the tree. Holding the graphite stick at different angles allows for varied textures, giving your sketch a three-dimensional quality.

Step 2: Add Precision and Detail

To refine the initial shapes, use a pencil for more detailed work. Hold your pencil far back for less precise strokes, focusing on the overall structure rather than perfect lines. For this tree sketch, adding a few branches and offshoots enhanced the natural feel.

Step 3: Incorporate Color and Texture

Nature is never uniform, so embrace its diversity by mixing textures and colors. Use green pencils and tombow markers to depict new growth, blending shades for added depth. Adding small imperfections like brown or discolored leaves makes your sketch more realistic and grounded.

Step 4: Optional Finishing Touches

If you'd like to explore further, try adding a color wash using markers or pens. However, the natural textures created by the graphite and pencils may be enough to convey the charm of your subject.
