The Art of Dehydrating Flowers: My Personal Guide

As the founder of Estúdio PiMa and a passionate enthusiast of the botanical universe, I have always sought in nature an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The use of dehydrated flowers in my projects is one of my passions, and here, I would like to share with you a bit of my knowledge and experience in this enchanting field.

Dehydrating flowers may seem challenging at first, but some species are particularly more accessible for beginners. Among my favorites are mini roses, Spray roses, Gypsophila, tropical flowers, and Everlastings (the most well-known are: Straw Flower, Globe Amaranth, or Statice). These choices are mainly due to the ease of the dehydration process and their durability for use in arrangements.
Regarding foliage, eucalyptus leaves, eucalyptus seeds, and Ruscus stand out not only for their beauty but also for the ease with which they can be preserved.
Some precious tips I would like to share with you:
- Choose the right flowers: For beginners, I recommend starting with Gypsophila, mini roses, Spray roses, and Everlastings.
- Preparation is key: Careful cleaning of the flowers is crucial. Remove unwanted parts and adjust the length of the stems to speed up dehydration.
- Organize in bunches: Group the flowers into small bunches, using rubber bands and twine to keep them together.
- Choose the ideal location: Prefer places with little light and well-ventilated, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
- Patience is a virtue: The process can take from 10 to 30 days, varying according to the flower species and the region's climate.
Today, there are various techniques for dehydrating flowers, from natural methods to those involving chemicals. Air drying, by hanging the flowers upside down, is the most accessible and allows everyone to try it at home. This method is ideal for many types of foliage and durable flowers, producing amazing results.
Completing the dehydration process is just the beginning of the journey. Each dehydrated flower carries a unique story, ready to be incorporated into new creations.
