Craft Tutorial: tips to create textures with epoxy clay

Learn to loosen your hand and familiarize yourself with the material by obtaining different textures with Francesca Dalla Benetta.

Epoxy modeling clay is a very versatile material that allows you to create all kinds of sculptures and simulate a wide variety of textures on its surface. This plasticine can become hair, tree bark, skin...

If you are using this material for your creations, the plastic artist and sculptor Francesca Dalla Benetta (@francesca_dallabenetta) teaches you in the following video how to texturize your compositions with epoxy plasticine. Ready to make your sculptures come to life?

1. How to create a smooth surface

If we are looking for a smooth texture, the basic material to use is water. To remove the traces that we have inadvertently left when handling the plasticine, we wet its surface and use a spatula or very fine water sandpaper that we also dip in water. Using these tools, we will smooth the surface of our plasticine without problems.

2. How to texturize with stamping

To texturize epoxy plasticine, one of the simplest and most effective methods is stamping. To use it, it is not necessary to first smooth the surface, since when applying a texture the traces and imperfections that our hands have caused will be disguised and neutralized.

The key aspect of this process is the choice of our texturizer. It can be a fruit (an orange, a lemon), a leaf or something whose surface has a particular texture, such as the bark of a tree. Once this object has been chosen, the only thing to do is to press it on the plasticine so that the selected texture is transferred to its surface. For other types of texture, especially to simulate animal fur, we can use rags or towels. The important thing is to experiment with different objects to obtain different textures for our sculptures.

3. How to texture with tools

Another possibility is to create textures through the use of tools such as punches or spatulas. To use this type of materials to create textures, we will cover the plasticine with a thin plastic, to prevent the tools we use from sticking to it. With a punch we will obtain a texture of lines or wrinkles, with a spatula a texture of, for example, scales, etc.

If we want more marked lines or shapes, we can try applying the tools directly on the plasticine. Although more uncomfortable, we will get different textures that may be the ones that will allow us to achieve the result we have imagined.
