1. Jan van Rymsdyk
Dutch 18th-century anatomical artist who worked for William Hunter and William Smellie. Known for his medical illustration work for some of the most notable obstetricians of the time

2. Max Brödel
Black-and-white illustrations in old medical textbooks have a very distinct style: The smooth shading effects show as much of the texture of a tissue as you need to see to be able to understand the shape and detail of an organ. Many of these images were created using a technique developed in the early twentieth century by medical illustrator Max Brödel. Brödel was the founder of the medical art programme at John Hopkins School of Medicine and inventor of the carbon dust technique.

3. Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest anatomists ever to have lived. He dissected more than 30 human corpses, exploring every aspect of anatomy and physiology, and recorded his findings in drawings of unparalleled beauty and lucidity. 4. Jan Stefan van Calcar
A 16th-century German-born Italian painter and draughtsman who is credit for eleven large woodcut illustrations of anatomical studies which accompanied Andreas Vesalius's work on anatomy. The most notable among these is the anatomical study of the human body entitled De humani corporis fabrica libri septem or On the Fabric of the Human Body in Seven Books (1543).

5. Nicolas Henry Jacob
Between 1831 and 1854, the French anatomist Jean-Marc Bourgery and his compatriot, Nicolas-Henri Jacob, a versatile artist, produced a richly illustrated and ground-breaking medical textbook that is regarded as a scholarly and artistic masterpiece, and continues to influence the aesthetics of the representation of human anatomy to this day.

6. Jan Wandelaar
Jan Wandelaar was an 18th-century painter, illustrator, and engraver from the Northern Netherlands. Wandelaar trained under Jacob Folkema, Gillem van der Gouwen, and Gérard de Lairesse, and made a name in anatomical art after drawing for Fredrik Ruysch.

7. Peter M. Lawrence
Peter M. Lawrence, MS, CMI is an award-winning Board Certified medical illustrator and researcher specialized in creating illustrations depicting neuroanatomy, brain and spine conditions, and neurosurgical procedures.

8. Ciléin Kearns
A medical doctor and talented contemporary artist creating cartoon-like illustrations to inform the public about medical subjects in an engaging way.
