David Lloyd began his photographic career in 1968 as a lighting gaffer and stage grip for NBC in Burbank, CA. Lighting the set for the Carol Burnett Show, Rowen and Martin’s Laugh In, Andy Williams and Perry Como Christmas Specials and the TV production of Robin Hood. David’s career continued as a New Product Design Engineer for the Vivitar Corp. in1975, where he was granted a US Patent for electronic flash design and the development of color darkroom products. As a practicing film based wedding, portrait and commercial advertising photographer, working at Vivitar allowed for after hour use of their color darkroom equipment, where David clocked in over 2,500 hours of film based color printing.
While at Vivitar, David attended Art Center College of Design and subsequently developed a photography curriculum for the Vivitar staff, which included behind the camera workshops at well known Hollywood Fashion Studios to provide a real world perspective for photographic product design for the Engineering Team. Time traveling through 35 years of prestigious aerospace engineering, with Lockheed Martin Aerospace, Teledyne Camera Systems and Litton Guidance and Control Systems, David opened a portrait studio in CA, from 1997 to 2007, where he joined the PPC and PPA while photographing weddings, high school seniors and commercial assignments on the Central Coast, as an early pioneer in the application of digital imagery.
Moving to AZ in 2007, David’s current achievements include the following:
• Organized and taught 5 consecutive years of 40’s Hollywood Lighting Workshops at the CAF Airbase in Mesa, AZ, culminating with Event Sponsorships by Sony, Tamron, Manfrotto, Profoto and Tempe Camera in 2015.
• Achieved CPP status through the Professional Photographers of America, accumulating 12 print merits, 33 service merits and 13 speaker merits.
• Authored and published the highly acclaimed coffee table book, “Creative OCF Lighting Techniques for Photographers” premiering in 2015 at the Hollywood 40’s CAF Lighting Workshop.
• Taught Digital Photography courses at Allen Hancock, Santa Barbara and Scottsdale Community Colleges.
• Cofounded and taught Get Image Ready photo workshops and model calls at Loft 19 photo studio in Deer Valley and Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, AZ
• Coauthored and published Get Image Ready magazine, highlighting local AZ photographers.
• Organized and taught over 60 Lighting Workshops via Meetups.
• Provided over 500 hours of one on one tutoring sessions to private students in environmental Portrait Lighting and digital image processing.
While David’s extensive photographic achievements, have also been outside of the PPA perimeter, his working photographic knowledge, related engineering achievements, photographic product design and entrepreneurial vision, parallel the most prestigious - thus uniquely qualifying him to provide a real world industry perspective of critique and sensitivity to the visual arts.
As a photographic judge, with a thorough understanding of the craftsmanship and artistic creativity required in creating visual impact, story telling, and compositional harmony, David brings over 50 years of acclaimed photographic expertise to the platform of photographic image critique and judging. An avid student, David continues to pursue education and of recent time, is returning to analog film photography for the enjoyment of a slower pace and the enveloping organic experience it provides.
