Thumbnails used to work out the composition. In this first rough sketch I began to develop the elements I wanted to include and the problems to be solved. At first I thought of having a very detailed background, which I included in this second sketch. In this third sketch I cleaned up the line work and decided to simplify the background. In the final sketch I added details, simplied background to focus on the characters, and modified squirrel's expression.A screen save of the color palette I referenced. Here I figured out the placement of colors and experimented with shades of gray for the squirrel. Here is the application of shadows and first washes of color. The color washes have been applied.Scanned final art with details added.

Teacher PlusHi,
Thank you for sharing your whole process. It's really interesting to see all your steps, and hesitations around the sketches.
The result looks really nice, with this cute scene. I also like the fresh color scheme, it gives a beautiful spring vibe! Congratulations!
Best,
Julie
