For over forty years, I have made art in many mediums. I’ve explored stone and wood carving, primitive photographic techniques, painting, printmaking and more. But the two constants have been photography and ceramics, mostly sculptural. Early TAFE courses piqued my desire to gain further qualifications and in 2021 I attained a Bachelor of Art (Fine Art) from Curtin University, followed by Honours at Deakin University.
I live near Wangaratta in northeast Victoria. This region and country living inspires my creativity. Much of my photographic work has focused on the interaction of people within their environment; the people are not seen, but their presence is evident. My sculptural works frequently feature modernist inspired clean lines and curves, and are inspired not by any deep meaning, but are created with this aesthetic in mind. During 2023 I have been creating a new series of sculptures that are more introspective.
I am producing a collection of small ceramic sculptures based on the theme of two. The title for this series is Kindred Spirits. In 2023, my husband and I will celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. These works commemorate this occasion. Each artwork consist of two parts; some connect, others interact. Most are in shades of black and reds, the black representing my husband, and the red for me. The blacks are grounding and solid, the reds are lighter, often with a pierced or textured surface. The inspiration for these artworks is not implicitly obvious, but my use of geometric forms with crisp edges and a limited colour palette creates a cohesive, intimately scaled collection of sculptures.
Creating provides me with great joy and a sense of achievement. It is immensely satisfying to develop an idea, see it to fruition and have an audience connect with it.
