About the final project for: Portrait Photographs that Tell a Story

Narration in the editorial portrait

“We have reached the end of the course, I hope you have learned new tools that will help you continue your path as a photographer, a path that has no end point. I can assure you that in each photo shoot I always have a new find, from infinite technical possibilities to build an image, to how to direct the characters; With some, I have had pleasant experiences, with others, there has been some tension, but from each of those encounters, I have great learning. As a photographer, you have to be prepared to work with very diverse people, they will all help you to be better in your trade, but above all, to be a better person. Remember this: every time you shoot, you must do it from the heart, that passion is your thread, she can make everything happen. Let yourself be guided by your intuition to shut up at the right time, you must understand that you will have developed that intuition thanks to the experiences you have lived at all levels, they feed on everything you see, read and hear; Of everything you hear and live. The set of these experiences will be the result of your work. Three years ago I did a workshop with Ruven Afanador, the most recognized and respected Colombian photographer in the world for his portraits. He has been one of my biggest influences, when I was a teenager I didn't have posters of rock bands or half-naked girls on the walls of my room; no, there was the promotional poster for Ruven's first exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá. In 2016, I was one of his students and in class I asked him about his method of colorization, and he replied: “I get it working”. I was waiting for a more concrete answer, I thought that maybe I didn't want to share what his process was like ... some time later, I understood that this simple phrase was a decisive advice, the most powerful of all. You have to work in a dedicated way in each of the aspects that builds an image, it is that simple (and complex). The best advice I can give you is that: devote yourself to work with determination, you have to study, read, shoot many photos, experiment with the light and its infinite possibilities to manipulate it, to get your own language; you must work intensely in the laboratory or in the digital postproduction processes, so Ruven Afanador does, "working", that's why it's unique, that's why it makes a difference. Let me see your final project, here I will be as a teacher to contribute my experience and answer your questions, thank you very much for taking this course. Greetings and good luck! ”

Partial transcription of the video

“Final project Thank you for watching the course. I hope you have motivated them for the project and I'm not leaving without summarizing everything we did in the course. First we saw the editorial assignment, then how to look for the story and ending, we finish with the investigation of the character. Then the preproduction of the portrait, of what must be done before the photo and we go to the preparation of the photos. We continue with the model management and then we were related to the study session. Then I showed my photo selection process, How can you play with them to build the story....”
